RandomHero
Which out of these two bonds is the strongest type of bond, covalent or ionic?I was under the impression that covalent bonds have the strongest bond between molecules (e.g. diamond)But Ionic bonds have the strongest bonds between atoms e.g. salt which is a giant ionic lattice and has a very high melting point.this is for my GCSE's by the way.Thank you. Dr. Nick Riviera
should've payed attention in science. covalent bonds are about the same realisticly but can be stronger, so in the context which you will be using it i'm sure it will be safe to assume that covalents are stronger
Hiltop
well it is hard to measure, especially as ionic bonds aren't single, but instead as you say form a gaint ionic lattice. for gcse's you don't need to know which is stronger, just know that both are strong. The quoted figure though are, (f**k knows how they actually manage to work it out):ionic 120-450 KJ/molcovalent 120-550 KJ/molhowever it varies greatly according to the crystal type. Thanks anyway
Joe_Kearney
Taken from Wikipedia:Covalent bonding is an intramolecular form of chemical bonding characterized by the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two components, producing a mutual attraction that holds the resultant molecule together. Atoms tend to share electrons in such a way that their outer electron shells are filled. Such bonds are always stronger than the intermolecular hydrogen bond and similar in strength to or stronger than the ionic bond.Brings back the GCSE Science, I got a B at GCSE which was good seeing as though i hated Biology and Chemistry; oh and i hated physics
