Shez.sheridan
As with many other bike related sports, it's obvious in trials that your body's going to take a lot of harsh abuse over time..however, everytime I bang a bone I seem to go through some of the milder symptoms of shock..Usually if brake slips on a drop/gap & I land on my back..no problem, I'll be up & walking again within 2-3 minutes; but knock my knee hard on the stem & my body goes ballistic...my breath shortens, I go dizzy & have to walk around constantly just to stop myself from feeling like I'm gonna pass out..This happened last night & it isn't the first time - does anyone else have this problem?Derv
Backgren
I don't like landing on my back, but as you say, if it happens and you don't land on anything sharp and pointy you'll most likely be alright. But, also as you said, to hit your knees, or something else, I have gotten the same dizzy weird feeling a few times. I always walk around, and I used to drink lots of water, when i hurt myself. I think it's mainly to do something elsa than to think of the pain, and to drink is always nice. Don't know why you can get that weird feeling though, might be a nerve or something you hit. Maybe someone on here can explain
ScotchDave
It's not something I personally have experienced, I suggest talking to the medical folk, might be a problem.
Smo™
No offence meant when I say this but you could just be a wuss when it comes to pain? I know people who run a cold sweat and babble like little girls when they cut themselves. Could be the same thing? I've only felt how you described when I've been in serious pain, like the time I sliced 3/4+ of my thumb off with a knife, sweating, feeling cold and on the verge of passing out.Maybe it's just a low threshold. Shez.sheridan
No offence meant when I say this but you could just be a wuss when it comes to pain? Lol...thanks, but I expect I have a relatively normal threshold...I'm not talking about pain - to be honest my knee didn't even hurt too much (I know I've had far worse when riding; with no problems) - just I think my body thought differently & seemed to go into overdrive..I've taken bad falls & been okay - I've propelled myself chin first onto rocks, broken my finger(s) etc & been relatively fine, but I've also had times where my body's automatic response seems to overcompensate for something that feels/seems far more minor - i.e. I bang my knee & my body seems to act as if I'm dying. What I'm trying to explain is that sometimes i think my psychological interpretation of an injury differs from my bodys physiological response..& does anyone else find this.. Krisboats
Nah, i've had plenty of pedal bashes to my shins and theres actually a small dent in my top tube from me swinging my knee into it during a failed 180. However the worst i get is actually feeling the pain, just gotta run around for a few seconds and try not to concentrate on it hurting and then i'm fine and back up and riding. Never have dizzy spells, never nearly pass out. I think some of the earlier replies where right though. I think you do just have a low pain threshold. Some people are just like that though... i told one of my friends about an injury once and he nearly fainted EDIT: Just seen your post above, in that case maybe its something else? These times where you get the shock type symptoms, have you had anything to eat that day? If your riding on an empty stomach you'll be more likely to suffer the effects of shock than if you had eaten something. One of my other friends has a condition with his knee called osgudschlatus (don't have a clue how u spell it) and basically his muscles grew faster than his bones when he was a kid and whenever he hits it while riding or any other blunt force trauma it swells up and he's in a great deal of pain and he has one of the most bizarre likings for pain i've ever seen, he has a massively high pain threshold yet this still makes him almost cry sometimes. Its supposed to go away when he's fully grown so after 18-23 it shouldn't bother him too much anymore.... but maybe you have something like that? It's inflammation of where you quad muscles in your thigh meet your shin (tibia), where the bone is actively growing (Bones only grow near the ends). Happens in a random group of people in their teens, mainly athletic types. And yeah, as soon as your bones stop growing, it stops I believe.I did a project on knee injuries a while ago. Shez - I have no idea what's up with you, but the body is weird like that. Like when you land on your bollocks, it doesn't actually hurt that much, but it makes you feel really sick and funny inside. Very hard to explain to a girl, and I guess it's just one of those weird things. So maybe you have a funny response to banging your knee or something? I've never had any problems when I've hit my knees, just it's f**king painful!
Lawnmowerman
It's deffinelty nothing to do with a low pain threshold. I have a very high threshold and i still nearly passed out hehe
Al_Fel
I've done it plenty of times with my knee's, shins and pube bone. It makes you feel all sick and dizzy and you have to walk round then sit down for a bit. As far as i'm concerned it totally normaly.Twating your pube bone is a bad one that really knocks you for six.I wonder how many people are gonna do that now I've just brought it into the light ha ha. Lee Cable
You mentioned falling onto your back, I fell on my back, and thought nothing of it, I was winded for a few minutes, but otherwise good. Went to doctors and he said i had cracked my ribs. It only hurts when i sneeze. But when i bang my knee on the stem, i go through almost the same thing, Loss of balance, sickness feeling, dizzy. After about 5 minutes ill be fine, i just think its my bodys way of dealing with things, I do tend to have a fairly high pain threshold. Which makes banging my knee painful. I also recently experienced this, getting out of the car. I banged my elbow, and i was in excruciating pain for about 5 minutes. Afterwards i was fine. It maybe just be todo with the extremeties. E.g. Arms and legs. Hope this helps you to feel, not alone in your pains! From Lee
Rich Pearson
Sounds relatively normal but just depends on a whole range of factors relating to your lifestyle. If you smoke or drink, have low blood pressure, your diet the amount of exercise you take and the variations of said exercise. there are lots of factors which can give you that temporary feeling of drowseiness/nausia. I get similar kinds of problems, like nearly blacking out at the last british round when my bike fell on me and hit me in the back of the head.Have a look at your lifestyle choices, go to a doctor and have a chat and see if theres anything that could be causing this realting to how you treat your body outside of trials.Rich
Greetings
Had a very bad reaction after badly falling onto my back. Couldn't breathe out any air and I was constantly making a low pitch yell, which I couldn't stop either. Had the symptoms you described after accidentally putting my finger into a rotating disc and almost having it cut off at the nail when it hit the caliper. Pretty lucky there, as the wheel was rotating damn fast - but it stopped. Then I got dizzy, weak and felt like vomiting. Not too pleasant. Never react badly to hitting my knee or other parts of my body. It's just very painful but goes away within a matter of minutes. One thing I've realized is, that the harder I hit my shin, the less it hurts.

Bike addict
As far i know this is relavent, i sometimes bash my knee cap on my stem bolts, and it shocks me to the extent that i have to stop riding and sit down for a few minutes
steve huddo
Hey,I was just wondering, have you ever smashed your knee cap into bits before(say riding moto cross and had a fall), if so or similar, you might just get the feeling that you had then. A lad i know did that on his moto bike, fell so hard on the foot peg and smashed his knee cap into bits, now when he runs/plays footie, he gets a tingling feeling in his knee, and feels faint. He has a high pain threshold( had an angle grider slip and enter his claf, half way to the bone, that was at work, and he didnt feel much of it, because the disc was spinning so fast it like cut through the veins but then sealed the ends of them because of the heat !!!) If not your body must over react to it, thinking that you have smashed/displaced you knee cap, but its all good. Run around and drink water, and deep breathing. After that you will be fine.Steve Edited May 24, 2006 by steve huddo
PaRtZ
Everytime I land sharply on my left leg, it feels as though its fractured and it vibrates all the way up it
anzo
Cure...Lie down on your back, elevate your legs. You get shock because of a lack of oxygenated blood to the head, so walking round it the worst thing you can do. People do actually die of shock, but it depends on what scale. When you hit your knee, its not a 'medical' shock, but a nervous reaction...the same sort of reaction as when you laugh when you hit a bone, although its been known that people laugh when they've twated their head open...therefore its hard to tell between the two, so any doctor will know, always persume shock...some people don't show any obvious signs. But yea, if you begin to feel dizzy and faint, lie down and put your legs up above your heart level...although the higher the better. TrashZen
Yep, the knee in the stem is painful. Solution, kneepads (I have given up this kind of stupid hit)But feeling all weird, that's more like you've mashed yourself and you know it's not going to look good (aprehension and adrenaline more than actual pain ). I usually float in a second state and try to forget it the time to ride back home to look at the injury. Then sit down or relax on your back. I felt bad when I looked at my open chin... before the 6 stiches.
