liam-pantera
Hi everyone a week ago i bought a halfords bikehut stem for my base ta26 and i thought i would do a short review so here it is enjoy.component:halfords bikehut stem 24.7 standard clampforks :onza smartguysbars:base raisersNow halfords aren't really renowned for making really good components but recently they have brought out some really nice parts, one of these was the bikehut stem. The stem on first impretions is neat and clean , the stem is very light as it is made out of aluminium. The clamp is good looking and well designed but unfortunately it uses m5 bolts instead of standard m6 bolts with worried me because the m5 are easier to round. The stem has about 15 degrees of rise wich makes the front end rise really nicely. The stem come in 2 options with the standard clamp and a huge 31.8 to fit zoo bars and onza carbons, this stem will not break the bank either as the standard clamp only cost £12 and with the 31.8 clamp costing only £15 it would seem like the cheapest oversized stem available. So to round off this stem is amazing value for money and it makes your bike feel immense, I would defiantly recommend it.9 out of

JoNnY__Mc
really useful review there mate good to see that there are cheaper parts put there that still hold up to the abuse of trials... well we don't know that yet but deffinately let us know how it stands up to trials over the next few months thanks for the review mate, Jonny

Egg Fried Rice
that was a great review, my mate has one on his 26" and its a great ride too, looks "cheapish" but takes alot of abuse, trust me. the things my mate does on his bike is very agressive. you can never judge things on the way it looks. people only go for ZOO anbd try all because they believe the more popular the better but some one has to try out new things and thats exactly what base guy has done Edited May 23, 2006 by J-KAY
Chris Elson
i dont no if i would go for a halfords stem, id rather go for the one that i no is made by a good company but on the other hand they could be very good, but i no what i would do. :) chris121

anzo
i dont no if i would go for a halfords stem, id rather go for the one that i no is made by a good company but on the other hand they could be very good, but i no what i would do. :) chris121You are aware that Try-all/Echo/Zoo and whatever stem you want are all made in a crumbly little factory somewhere with a name branded on and then the price up'ed to 30 odd quid don't you?I really wouldn't be supposed if 'Manufacture X' was contracted to 'Trials Brand X, Y and Z'. It doesn't REALLY matter what the make is, at the end of the day its pot luck that you got one that was actually glanced at by someone in Quality Control. The fact that its from helfrauds won't make it any weaker than a 2 million pound on from Tryall. Admittedly, trials specific parts probably will be stronger as they'll obviously be made for the purpose.
adamtrials
You are aware that Try-all/Echo/Zo... ...ade for the purpose.Word.Surely you've noticed how many of the products today look exactly the same just with different names. And your presuming that anything with halfords on it is crap, yet if a new company calledHeng Chung Ping came out claiming to be "trials" components you probably wouldnt doubt the products they produce?Look at this photo, i know there xc stems but if you were to see those 3 you wouldnt think"theres 2 stems from well respected brands and a crap halfords one", if anything you would probably be more attracted by the carbon halfords one...[attachmentid=4847] Edited May 24, 2006 by adamtrials

liam-pantera
Hi guys ive been running the stem for 2 months now i think and its still running beautifully, the only problem ive had with it was the fact that one of the stem to steerer bolts rounded but i soon fixed it with a longer m6 bolt. Its took some hammer i mean the first week i had it i went out and landed to two wheels on a 6 foot drop for the price you cant realy complain and as for zoo and echo etc..... who realy cares id rather buy a helfords stem in confidance noing were to take it bak if it snaps and also its less likely to have been made by tiwanise slaves in a wooden crate .for 12 pound its amazing value and strength and u should give them a chance . Tall_Rob
Darren Hill thought bike hut stems were good. He got mad......He threw his bike......He twisted his stem?????Tore his front brake hose aswel but nothing else was damaged apart from twisting (ie. like ringing out a cloth) his bike hut stem.Other than that it was a good stem.Rob

aener
hay most kids need to do trials on shoe string budget so its bike hut or second hand one you don't no the history of !!!!!HERE HERE!!!!I was in Halfords today and saw some "Bikehut" bars... I went over to them and there was about 8 varieties of different rise/sweep/combination. They looked almost exactly the same type of material as the specific brand bars (Zoo, Echo etc) and were only just a tiny bit heavier.Hmmmm... I might get some of these I thought, but then I also thought Ah, wait a minute, this is Halfords, they'll be about £80 I looked up and saw the price tags... The MOST expensive ones were £26.99!Now if you look at the history of this brand, (this stem review) I'd give them a go... Especially at the price they were......To add a little more info to this reveiw Flipp
xris_x
I love the response to someone doing something practicle like reviewing cheap products!Bikehut stems are made by Toiga...anyone want to say anything about Toiga? last time i checked they made some good parts. And like it was said, half the stems (and frames) we see are all made in the same factory and just have a different sticker on them, so dont follow brand names like sheep, go out and try them before you splash out £50 on a new"branded" one...what if the cheap one is good?On the plus, its good to see so many riders here with their heads screwed on, no wonder there is a system to filter out people from the main forum.
