trials_pimp
ok, I have NTL 2MB Braodband.and since installing a wireless router I think my internet is alot slower.I have a cable from the wall to the Broabdband Modem, then from that to the router, then 1 to my computer, and a laptop on wireless. Now I used to able to download upto 258k, but now can only get up to 60k.Whats going on? Did some speed test, and got 968.4 kilobits per secondIs that good for 2mb?Also why are my download speeds way down?Is there somethign I need to do to the router to make it run at full speed. The woreless is all setup with a password and shit, and works on the Laptop, but I havent tested the speed on it. UrbanPoet
Kbps - Kilo Bits/sKBps - Kilo Bytes/sADSL line speed is measured in Bits, so say you're on a '1MB' connection - with it actually being around 1024kbps - your maximum theoretical speed should be 1024/8 = 128 Kilo Bytes/s. This is the speed that will be quoted on whatever download manager you use.Bear in mind that your actual speed will depend on a number of factors, including distance from the local exchange and the contention ratio - usually 50:1.The contention ratio is the number of users sharing an allocated set of bandwidth. Meaning that at peak times your actual download speed will be much lower than the maximum. The other factors are complicated.Oh and also, those online tester are quite inaccurate.Feel free to correct some info if I've lost the plot or missed some point.Tom
trials_pimp
Yea I can understand that, but why since putting a router in has my download speed crashed out?Without the router I was downloading at 250-260KNow its right down at 60. What can I do to get it back to where it should be with the router?>
UrbanPoet
What router is it?
tomturd
Have you tried putting it back to before you had the router? If you do that does your download speed go back to normal? Obviously, if it does we know its a problem with the router then...

Krisboats
Is the router shring to other computers? If so then they will be taking up bandwidth and slowing down your internet connection... Its the same router i have and i can manage speeds of around 170 kbps off tv.isg and around 180 usually on trials shack. I have found though that my msn doesn't like sending my webcam, though i havn't cehcked to see what other things that could be.I my mum connects the laptop to the internet i can expect a drop of about 20kbps and if she downloads something as well it goes to just over half of what it normally is so i get about 80-90 kbps.Mine is also a netgear wireless modem/router, 54mbps, DG834Gv2 model. trials_pimp
thought of that, but the speed is super low when I am online alone. The only other computer it goes to is My sisters laptop, wireless.Even when thats off, my downloads are poor ass
Hobnobs
Is the signal quality at excellent or something like that Mr Mccaw? If its at "crap" then download speed suffers, but i guess you already knew that.
trials_pimp
wont make any differnce t me, my PC isnt wireless, its got a cable running from the router to the ethernet cardand signal is allawyas excelent for my sister
Hobnobs
Ah right, just assumed it was wireless. Maybe its crap quality cable, or if its USB 1.1 then it will be slower than wireless...
