anzo
Haha, clever title, eh? eh?anyways...PC Downstairs (Host)Connection via Cable/Network CardLaptop Upstairs When its all plugged in, the connection is recognised, but wont let me connect to the net nore will it let me share files. The PC (Host) holds the modem and is the main dailling computer. Looking at the properties for the connection (LAN) there is no Default Gateway address, which I guess is the cause? So, how do I get the Def. Gateway address and how do I make my laptop/PC recognise it? Any ideas?
Monkey
My guess, if your laptop is connected with a cable to the pc and the pc goes to the outside world through usb or another network card:Network connection sharing is not enabled on the pc. I'm pretty certain that its the Def. Gateway that SHOULD have an address but doesn't. But no idea how to fix that, I tried clicking Repair...but still won't work.Cheers Monkey
Danny
ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) in windows is rubbish. Chances are if you get it working it wont work for long anyway. I recommend you get yourself a router. How does your current modem connect? If its usb and your on adsl then you'll have to buy an adsl modem/router. If the modem plugs in via a normal network port (my telewest one does) then a normal router (Cheaper ~£20-25) without a built in modem would work. Its worth spending the money i feel. Also it has the advantage of not having to dial up or have one pc on just so the other can access the net.If you dont want to do this (not recommended) you have to connect the 2 pcs with a crossover cable. Are you sure your using a crossover and not a patch cable? After connecting them run the wizard in Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard firstly on the host machine then the laptop. As for default gateway on mine its set to the ip of my router and did that itself automatically. Maybe set it to the ip address of the host machine? Just run the wizards and that should set everything up for you.

My modem is USB connected and im on ADSL I'll try deleting the network and then re-installing it all again before buying a router, simply because its worked before, and it should still work now Thanks
MaXsteri
As in directly connected using crossover cable rather than a hub/switch i take itIf so you have to assign the ip address manually, start there, check they both ips and report backToms post wasnt there when i started typing Edited May 12, 2006 by MaXsteri
MasterOfGussets
I had this trouble after my Windows box crashed... I just did a bit of an ugly bodge:On your host PC:Goto a command prompt and type in "ipconfig /all". Note down the IP address of the network interface, etc.On your laptop:Goto My Computer > Control Panel > Network And Dial-Up Connections. Right-click on the icon relating to your set up and select Properties. In the list box, select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)." (Don't tick/untick the box, just select the option). Hit the Properties button below that box which should bring up a new dialog. Hit the button that says Advanced at the bottom of that Window. Add a default gateway and use the IP of the Host you got from the command prompt. Click across to the DNS tab then enter the same IP as the DNS server. That should work as far as I remember. If not there is another way to do it through a command prompt on the laptop which I should be able to tell you about. In my opinion though, it's much easier to scrap Windows and run Linux EDIT: Make sure DHCP is enabled on the Host. (My Computer > Control Panel > Network And Dial-Up Connections; Right-click on network icon and select Properties... should say it in the listbox at the top.) F-Stop Junkie
If it was working before, then it's likely something is dishing out incorrect network addresses with DHCP.On both PCs, click Start -> Run then type command, and press enter. When the DOS window opens type IPCONFIG /all and press enter. If you cut and paste these details into a post here, then we'll be able to look a bit closer and give better ideas as to what's going wrong.
