PaRtZ
I recently bought some spokes from a shop and when I finished building the wheel they were too long. I thought I must have made a mistake (using G-sport wheel building guide) but I can't see how I have. When I got given the spokes they said to use a 4X lace, (hence the g-sport build guide) but I still can't see why my spokes are too long I have now tightened the spokes as much as possible, and cut the excess thread off, but the spokes still aren't as stiff as I'd like to be honest . The wheel is a profile mini cassette to a kris holm, and I think the kris holm erd is the same as a koxx. I was given 182 and 180 spokes. The spokes are the right ratio though. I mean the drive side spokes aren't excessively shorter than the non-drive side etc. But they're too damn long lolDoes anyone have any ideas? Thanks Edited May 10, 2006 by PaRtZ
Mark W
If you're sure you've laced them right, you're probably just going to have to buy some new spokes. Next time, don't cut the spokes at all and call the people you got them from and say they're too long, I can't imagine they'd just say "Tough shit" or anything, and they'd probably be able to help you out This is going to sound stupid, but did the spokes come in boxes or just in a bag of them or what? Did you measure the length of them just in case they'd accidentally put the wrong size spokes in the parcel?
AdamR28
Got a decent side-on picture of the wheel? I've built at least 20 like that with no problems, seems strange they should be the wrong length this time...
PaRtZ
Well I may have found the reason. During the build you're supposed to twist the hub (after the first 18 spokes have gone in) and perhaps i didn't twist it correctly? If you've built so many up then its pretty obvious im at fault lolOK heres some pics:[attachmentid=4492][attachmentid=4493]
AdamR28
Yeah, thats a 3 cross build, you need to go 'over, over, over, under' for 4x (rather than just 'over, over, under' for 3x).Like Marky said, should have gives us a shout! Hope the wheel holds up though
Alun Goch
There's a spoke length calculator somewhere isn't there? See if the length that gives is the same.If they're the wrong length, take them back and ask for the ones you need, might even get something for the time you've wasted building up the wheel too, though they have the right to turn around and say no as you've cut them down now!Just be politely unhappy and see what they offer you!Alunp.s Did you like my ffart on bebo?! Hope the wheel holds up though I can kinda see where the confusion may have occured if he was using the G-Sport guide - George recommends an over-over-under-over 4X lacing pattern, so unless you keep your wits about you it's easy to balls up. PaRtZ
Yeah, thats a 3 cross build, you need to go 'over, over, over, under' for 4x (rather than just 'over, over, under' for 3x).Sorry for sounding really retarded, but I can't see the "4th" cross? !:$Bah it works at the moment anyway. Brake seems fine too. If it blows up Ill be on the blower for some more, but please send some 3x next time or ill bollocks it up again :$Thanks all
Mr Motivator
Doesn't matter that much really.I'm using spokes that are 1.5mm too long in the front. When I had a singlewall echo rim, I had to grind them down so they didnt pop through the tape and tube. It's fine.
munkee
Reminds me of when i tried to build my front king on a ronnie rim 3x when the spokes were lengthed for 2x... that took a good 8 hours of figuring out until ads told me they were for 2x not 3 lol
AdamR28
Sorry for sounding really retarded, but I can't see the "4th" cross? !There isn't a 4th cross, hehe, that's why you can't see it. You've built the wheel 3 cross
