It's obvious we've got some good photographers in our midst, so hopefully some of you will have some good advice. I've had a Fuji S5000 for two years, and it's an excellent camera, but I need something a little better.

I've been looking at the Nikon D50 and the Canon 350D, and I'm just interested to know what general opinions are. I won't be buying for a month or two, but I need minimum of 6 megapixels, 1/4000th to 30 second exposure times, good quality, flash hot-shoe, decent general purpose lens.

Thanks.

Both the 350D and D50 are good. Try both and see which you find most comfortable to hold, logical to use, etc... Basically, you can't go wrong either way.

Don't buy from Pixmania, warehouseexpress.com are good. Even Jessops can be competive on price, and will match some prices if pushed. Keep an eye out for 'free memory card' or cashback offers.

I was in your position and I bought the 350D from Jessops. Got a deal with it so I got the upgraded USM lens and so on, and it's turned out really nicely. The camera's really intuitive to use, and even people who I haven't explained the camera to can pick it up and use it really easily. My Mum saw a cat in our garden doing something and decided to grab a pic of it, and she just picked up my camera and managed to just blitz out a photo on full manual really easily, which is a pretty good sign for the camera. Personally, I found the Nikon harder to use. As I said, with my Canon I just skimmed through the "quick start" thing in the manual, and then just went from there. The menus are really easy to use, the playback is super easy to sort out, and it's really easy to sort out pics. The different modes work really well too. I'd definitely recommend it, but saying that, so would anyone who's bought a Nikon, so just go and check 'em out at a Jessops or somewhere near you that has them both in stock :)

I don't care what anyone says but both the Nikon D50 and the D70s are SOOOOO easy to use!

One dial on the front for aperture, another on the back for shutter. Just a quick spin of the dials and you can get from really fast settings to really slow in no time.

Out shooting bmx today and when my mate was coming up the hip I could sit under him and adjust the settings so fast, i'm sure the canons the same as when I had a go on a 350D the front dial does the shutter and then you hold down a little button and spin it for the aperture.

Then on the back theres quick short cut buttons for iso, white balance, playback, zoom (to check focus) and lock so you don't accidently delete any good photos, even though thats pretty hard.

The menu is split into four sections and tis really easy to scroll through and change anything, although I can't say I ever use it when out, apart from to change the flash mode or file type (Raw or jpeg)

All the basic settings you need are done through the short cut buttons and dials on the back.

Can't complain about my d70s, been pleased from day 1.

Even though the canon was cheaper I just didn't facnie it, it was smaller and i've just always wanted a D70.

So yeh......there as good as each other really.

350D for me. Light, easy to use and just generally very good.

My mates nikon body just doesnt compare in my eyes. Colours are all a bit funny, bad fps, and just feels massive.

Though, with either you will be happy, compared to any point and shoot, they are a massive upgrade.

Haha. I work at Jessops so I know the offers on :)

There's a 'internet price matching' thing from UK based internet websites (.co.uk's) mainly 'cos they're wankers like that, and thats pretty decent. We did have 20% off memory cards which brought them to really competitive prices but now that's finishe I think.

I've got a D50 with a few lenses which I got from Jessops before and while I'm working there. It's really good, and I've used most cameras out there. Canon 30d, 20D 350d etc, Nikon D70's etc etc. I personally prefer my camera for the reasons Rob pointed out.

It so easy to use, and the body has a better feel to it than the Canon EOS 350D. It's all plastic and just in my opinion harder to use, however people will disagree. I have been a Nikon man all my life though..

With either you can't go wrong. If you wonna chat about it then just gimme a shout. Might be able to get staff discount @ jessops for you?

Nick..

Nah. Today I just got accused of theft from this Manager where I was working to cover someone's shift in Bradford. Stupid c**ts.

Was putting my motorbike boots on and the guy said "what are you doing in your bag", So I just said um putting my boots on?

And he said well whats that Ixus 750 doing behind the door and I just said wtf *looks behind door* oh, how the hell do I know. Its not even my store! Then called some manager from down the road and he just said so yeah go home.

I'm really sorry but why Would I need an Ixus when I've got my dSLR worth about £1400 :S

They've even got pretty shite write ups. Client I know as a family friend gave me one 3 months ago for doing a website and I just sold it cos I don't need it.

Tard. Well pissed off. I'm going into the Police too so if they try follow his accusation up with anything with them I'm f**ked .GRRR.
