Shite! :o :o :o Those pictures were all amazing. The angles were brilliant, the light etc were perfect apart from a bit of sun glare, however some people that actually know about photoraphy may disagree with me. But, the riding... Well that was just amazing, i dont believe how much Ali is underrated. (N) Your amazing Ali, you bearded lesbian.

Cheers,

Joe.

I recon you're setting the standard for Trials photography, stunning clarity, all the action captured!

J.

Aww Jonny thanks! :) That made me smile!

It's a shame I can't ride for shit. And yeah, Ali's awsome, came higher than Akrigg in the last Brits I think? And Stan's smooooth as f**kkk and huge :P;)

Right, time to be unpopular again.

The photos are in places good, some not so good, a couple have very good composition.

However... A lot of them have very strong saturation, with a heavy emphasis on the reds. Ali has come out crimson in a few shots! A load also have a strong magenta cast where the WB is set wrong.

I do think though that many of these would be improved with a burst of flash. The first natural pic you put up is potentially a great shot, but the big rock slab to his left is brighter than Ali is, detracting attention away from the rider. A flash put in any one of about 5 places could really have made that a great shot, but instead it's only good. The couple where you have used the flash, it's a stop or two too bright.

You were certainly in the right place for the evening light, and that looks good. Overall, I'd have probably not posted a third of the shots you did, and used a bit of fill flash on most of the others.

Cracking riding though! Ali is crazy.

How bloody long have you done photography :S nicely spotted though in my opinion I would still have posted them all because the riding is immense and the only way to improve is through trying.

Hopefully Ali will be releasing some footage he got given :P that made me go WTF.

Thanks again for posting these nick

Good call Chris :) - Thanks.

Yeah. I definately know what you mean about fill flash. I did try to use it in the evening, but it was a bit spontanious and decided to not work quite a lot, due to the batteries being dead so I found out.

The mid-day light in the morning was hard to get away from. Which did highlight a lot of colours, but I should really of toned them down in photoshop. I'll have to have a word with you about the White Balance stuff. I can never seem to get it right.

The big slab in the photo of Ali in Back Cowm Quarry, is the rock he ended up on. He came from the left, up to back wheel then bounced off on to the rock to the left. I did get a mid-air shot but it looked shit. So didn't post it.

Looks like I need to get used to shooting in bright conditions with flash. It was only the second 'proper' attempt I used for changing the Fstop, Shutter, Flash power and other stuff though. So not that bad.

Thanks again Chris,

Nick

Oh, and I'm happy that the Fuji cams of this world may not contain the best light metering algorithms in the world, but you're using a good camera now. Please, leave the manual setting alone, try out have and Tv. You can not balance flash, ISO, shutter speed and aperture unless you have a lot of time and experience. I know most people arn't happy with full auto, and I don't blame you, but try leaving the flash on TTL, set an ISO to get a good shutter speed, and then try have or Tv, you'll spend a lot less time worrying about camera settings, and a lot more time looking through the viewfinder which can only be a good thing. You wouldn't have blown out Ali's crash picture either....

Manual mode is not for heros, it's for studio work and people way more experienced than myself! Stick with have or Tv, keep control, let the camera do the work and take a lot less test shots.

BTW, which AF points do you use?

Well. AF I had it set up as center-weighted. On my Nikon I think your Tv is P on mine. So you can adjust the shutter to whatever you want and it adjusts the aperture automatically.

I had it on Auto to see what it came out with and the photos were shit. White washed and shockingly bad. Seriously. I found that sometimes when I had the flash on TTL BL and then camera set to external TTL it sometimes wouldn't fire. I want it to use fill flash, but it didn't fire at all. I'm guessing it was saying it's bright enough for no flash?

I don't want that. But I don't know how to change it. ISO were all on 200. I might turn it to Auto ISO levels though, see what they come out with.

I did find myself taking f**king loads of test shots. I mean loads. Quite annoying really. The light meter on my camera's pretty rubbish I think, and I don't think I know enough about the light conditions to what F number and Shutter combination I should use. Again, I'll ask you on MSN soon about that.

^_^
