Adrian
hey, i've seen a lot of vids now of people snapping there chains and it ends up messy every time, and this has scared a little so i was wondering how often you should change your chain in trials and what chain do you use??? adrian
anzo
I think its just bad luck to be honest mate. I wouldn't bother with set timetable of replacement, but if you had to, I'd say every 6 months?Just inspect it for cracks now and then, any obvious wear, keep it lubed and you should be ok. If you do all that, and your chain snaps, I don't think its something that could have really been prevented to be honest.Perhaps a thicker chain will make you a little more confident? Mark W
KHE Collapse Pro, or KMC Kool. Every time.I replace my chain the first sign of any trouble with it (e.g. cracked roller, or whatever). I've snapped 3 or 4 chains riding trials, and each time was wank. It's aprox. the least fun ever. I try and replace it at least every 6 months; you can get Kool chain for £7 now, so it's like just over £1 a month, which isn't bad, considering... coolbeen
I had a cheap chain and that snapped about 3 months ago and i had it for around a year or so i would say. I would change the chain when ever you snap the one you have got on and then get a KMC Kool chain. Edited May 3, 2006 by coolbeen
CurtisRider
kmc kool for sure often as you realistically can really, personally i do it every 3months or so, like mark said, they are only 7 quid now, buy a few (saves postage ) and have some spare, 28quid a year for a new chain every 3 months doesnt sound bad at all to me
JT!
At leaset twice a year.Or maby if i'm taking my back wheel off i'll just change it for the sake of it.
old_boy_rider
Depends how often you ride - twice a year at least - but its more important that it's joined properly, and that you replace it if damaged- its not usually wear that breaks a chain
DAB
Buy a ROHLOFF S-L-T99 TRIAL... £30... the best chain on the planet.... you no when to change it when the rollers start to crack.... takes anywhere from 1-3 years been using them for over 5 years now and touch wood never had one snap on me yet If not do the norm.. lube it and look after it.. if you not using a rohloff, change it every 6 months to be on the safe side.. be warned though.. even if you change it every 6 months it might still snap... I used to use shimano chains (got given then for free) and i snapped 2 in 1 week.... then again they could last the 6 months
stock trials the real sport
I don't really see the point in spending so much on a chain although it is a pretty important component i jus ride with a KMC KOOL a nice fat bmx one just get one of those and when it starts to get knackered e.g cracked, rusted etc just replace it.And take good care of it oil it and such what. If you keep a chain clean and lubed up it will last longer. If its dirty and has no oil it will wear out alot quicker. Also, if you dont join the chain properly, it is more likely to give way. BMX chains are weaker than normal 8 speed chains, THATS IF YOU RUN MTB COGS.. the reason is that the bmx chains have longer pins because the plates need to be further apart the fit a thick sprocket that bmx's use, when you fit them on to a mtb sprocket, the pin bends under the pressure that trials put on them and then they fail... the smaller the pin, the less likly it is to bend... and chains normaly brake at the pin where they fail and pop out of the plate because they bend, then you end up in a hole and in pain

Apocalypse_reaper666
As the other's have said, get a kmc kool chain! I myself have also bought one. But investing in a chain mesuremend device would also be handy because it will tell you how much your chin has streched and then to change it. edit: dam ive forgot to spellcheck ........ done! knappers !!!
kme collapse chains are wicked in design but they also offer a lot more strength than most

For single speed... KMC Kool k710For running gears, or mountain bike cassette rear sprockets.... KMC Kool k810Nothin else is neccessary. Ali C
I am NEVER EVER running a rohloff chain again!!! I had the trials virsion and I snapped it after 3 weeks and it put me in hospital. It snapped across the plate too, so it wasnt down to how it was put together by me.I now run only kmc kools (8spd virsion) I have snapped a couple, but I still trust them more than other chains. Si-man
I never lube my chain and nothing bad ever happens to mine an I live by the sea!Changed mine on trialsbike every 3 months or so. (KMC Kool)On bmx, Had the KHE collapse on for around 4 months now, no obvious signs of wear...yet. Should really change chain everytime you break it really because it stretches.I would rather spend £30 on a reliable chain, than £6 on an unreliable chain that will probably result in over the bar supermans
stock trials the real sport
My KMC runs perfectly fine but if you wan't to waste 30 bucks on a chain go ahead i say,but KMC's rule
