stock trials the real sport
I have new forks and im not sure how to fit a crown race bit onto the bottom, i think theres some kind of special hammer or something but i did it last time by filling round the sides of the forks and wacking it on, it did work but at that time i had little experience in bikes and i would like to do it properly now so does anyone know how please? Tried wacking with hammer dosent work
Lawnmowerman
Get an adjustable spanner, open it to the same width of the steerer and slide it down hitting the crown evenly all the way round

Lawnmowerman
Make sure you dont hit the bearing race though
old_boy_rider
I use a small piece of scaffold tube cut to about 300m long, just the right diameter to slide over the steerer tube and tap the crown race in place.
Mark W
Whatever you do, hold your forks up to the light and make sure that it's properly seated all the way round. Make sure it's level and at the bottom of the steerer before riding!
stock trials the real sport
Thanks but the spanner thing didn't really work and i dont happen to have a scaffold pole handy is there any other way of doing this? cheers
Mark W
You can do the spanner trick, but hammer down on top of the spanner too, and that often works? Alternatively, just make like me and hammer it on there with not a care in the world
DrEvil270183
i jsut used a screw driver and tapped it with a hammer at either end until it was flat at the bottom of the steerer

Mark W
Yeah, getting them on sucks sometimes. Have you tried thoroughly cleaning the crown on the fork, and then putting a little grease on?
stock trials the real sport
yep wel i didn't clean but greased it thouroughly thanks for the help though i have it half on to the point where it will neither go any further or come back off, but ill keep trying
stock trials the real sport
Success! It took a mixture of techniques but the screw driver was the best it seemed. cookie456_the2nd
For future reference, pop down to your LBS and they should have a little tool that knocks them down.Only takes a minute and they will probably do it for free.
stock trials the real sport
Yeah well the nearest bike shop is hellfrauds and they have a 2 week waiting list and charge over the odds. So it made a lot more sense to do it myself
