Bmxers Look In: Rounded Off Crank Bolt.

Recommended Posts

Hello, My friend has just bought a BMX and the non-drive side crankarm bolts is rounded off and the BB bearings need to be changed, He likes his cranks and BB atm so no angle grinding!

What can you suggest to get the crankarm off and the bearings out?

Cheers, Alan. B)

If it's a standard 3-piece crank, undo the right side bolt and hammer the spindle through the BB with the left-side arm still attached? Having done that, you should then be able to push arm further onto the crank arm slightly, meaning you can get some mole grips on the bolt's side, to undo it.

ALAN: take off drive side and hammer the axle-bearing-crank arm out as one

ALAN: like 2 piece cranks

:)Rob: will it go through?

:)Rob: 2 mins

ALAN: it might do

ALAN: i dnt see why not, other people have done it like that

Like I said - if it's a standard, 3-piece set of cranks, you should be able to do that (unless it's a well old unsealed design or something). It takes a load of hammering sometimes, but it will work. I've found that an 8mm allen key and a hammer usually does the job (8mm going through the crank arm and going onto the END of the axle (not into the threaded part or anything stupid :P, then hammering that).
