What Is The First Thing

I'd consider myself a half engineer, as I've got a-levels in mechanical engineering and might be able to get a job with my qualifications, but without experiance it's very hard. Im doing an HND in engineering at the minute and after that i'll either go into employment or go to uni, depending on what sort of money i'd be earning if I was to go into work.

There is two distinct ways to get into 'engineering' in northern Ireland at least.

You can do it the academic way and continue with schooling/college and get professional qualifications (hnd/degree) or alternatively;

you can do an apprenticeship type thing and work your arse off for three years getting £110 a week for full time hours and a £15,000/yr job at the end of it. This is usually in the field of car mechanics, but I know a fella who works for shorts in belfast aswell. At the end of your three years you get qualifications, but I don't think they are even the equivalent to A-levels, more like NVQ's and such.

I'd consider those who go off and do the academic route or work their way up the chain to be the real engineers. Those who are content to take their place in the production line following a process sheet or working in a local garage on bog standard every day cars, while they may be able to perform their specific tasks better than the aforementioned 'engineers' are perhaps only able to perform the tasks which they have been specifically trained in as part of the employment induction or whatever.

An engineer can be anything from someone operating a lathe to the person who designed the lathe and made the drawings for it.

The reason so many people associate engineers to car mechanics is because car mechanics are the closest thing to engineers most people ever come into contact with.

:huh:
