Downhill Bikes

Evening all,

Right, I normally get some sort of 'temporary' hobbie over the summer, as its well on its way I've thought about starting downhill. Problem is it costs a bomb (although I've looked in MBUK, which they'll be top end, brand new bikes not really what I need) and they seem to be a bit rare second hand.

I'll happily buy one second hand, but I've no idea what to look for, but I am really picky about my bikes. I've looked at an Orange Patriot on ebay, its about 600 quid mark, but its just...ugly, not too keen on the frame.

I know some people have DH bikes, or have a history with them, so hopefully I can get some advice from them. I want something...big. Big, meaty forks and shizzle like that...Don't ask why because I don't know, Its just a history of motorbikes, I don't feel comfortable on a bike that flimsy little suspension forks.

The Orange had Bomber forks, which looked fine :)

So, questions are. How much would I be looking to pay for a good quality, limited use, good looking, relativly decent DH bike?

I'd probably scrap up a grand I'd I needed to, but I would be looking to pay less ideally. Some might comment that this should be in the wanted section, but ideally I'm looking for guidance and advice rather than a sale.

I've never actually seen a proper DH bike, but are they actually as big as they look?

Cheers me dears.

My friend has a kona stinky with jnr t's. There quite big but not massize, I suppose this depends on what size you get them in. Im pretty sure that his in in small.

It has alot of travel and dropping of a 5ft drop feels like a curb.

There are very nice and comfatable bike to ride.

I personally prefer to ride this to get places, than any other bike, because not only is it quick its comfy.

Hope this helps you mate

There is that for sale on Ebay, currently at 500 quid with the reserve not met, tis a 2004 Specialized Big Hit Custom. How much do you think that would fetch?

Thats one sexy bike.

It would depend on the spec of the bike.

EDIT: i have looked at the bike, and i can confidently say that it will go for atleast £1000, :(

Spending a grand on a DH bike when I can't even walk without falling over is a bit over the top. DH seems like a bit of a b*****d, doesn't really seem to be any 'starter' bike with a decent spec for a few hundred quid.

The kona stinky there is one on ebay which is quite nice. Is that the same as your mates? If so, how much is he looking to sell for? Click Me

Just wait around for a bargain, I managed to get an intense uzzi frame for £250 with a king headset and shock.

Aye, but I don't really want to build one up. It'll cost a million times more, be a million times as long and be a million times harder....and then times all that by a million.

Easier to just buy a built one. :)

I would get a hard tail if I was you, They will teach you to ride smother pick out better lines. Then after a year buy a full sus rig and you will be so much faster than guys that have spent there fist year on a full sus rig.

On a side note I hope you have about £200 to spend on safety gear, I recommend a full face helmet,knee/shin guards as a bear minimum and strongly I recommend a body suite
