Don't forget also that most people using online dating/hookup sites make the mistake of using their best photos, so usually what you see on there is a best case scenario, and doesn't account for odd twitches, a nose which looks odd in the wrong light/angle and so on. I say 'mistake' because surely it's better to use average photos so that you end up with a smaller number of meets that generally have a lower chance of the other person being disappointed. I've never used Tinder (or, god forbit, snapchat) but from what I've seen a lot of people really do craft their best angle. However it'll all come out in the wash. It's just pictures of people who travel to developing countries and take photos of themselves with impoverished kids. On one level it's like that whole poverty porn thing, but of course in today's self-obsessed selfie age. If someone wants to brag about travelling or whatever, fine, but ultimately in these photos the poor people are just props in someone else's attempt to get some action. And these people probably came home 'touched' by the kindness of these people, and oh how awful that they suffer, but then as soon as they get home use the photos to exploit them in their own way. It's true, a huge amount of what we do online these days is just a thinly guised attempt to market ourselves, but these pictures of grinning middle class white kids in scenarios like these just make my skin crawl. And it's so f'cking typical of the white colonialist thing: as if they're some kind of saviour surrounded by the people they helped. Such f'cking bullsh't. Last time I was in Cambodia I saw some happy kids playing with some bits of rock near this tourist attraction, and of course white-linen wearing Americans stooping with their handycams to take 'that photo' of the malnourished kids. Oh aren't we extreme with our holidays, going where it's gritty and real and getting close to those who have tough lives.
