Hobnobs
Titanium is more abundant than steel though, the prices are only because welding it is vey expensive. Maybe its just because they arent selling enough to justify the price?

mat hudson
Titanium is more abundant than steel though, the prices are only because welding it is vey expensive. Maybe its just because they arent selling enough to justify the price? ti isnt more abundant than steel in metal form. otherwise it would be cheaper and more widley used. the bash isnt wedled either its cnc'd. Shaun H
Machining Ti is *VERY* expensive. Special cutting oil, drill bits (or whatever they're called in CNC mills) and other gubbins are required. No idea why they've changed although the increase in costs of Ti sounds about right. anzo
It has to be a material cost. They machine them out in their thousands as they already have the tools and equipment to do so. Correct me if I'm wrong, but now they have made them from steel, they have changed the entire work system of cutting/treating, meaning it would cost less to carry on as normal...unless there were a change in material prices meaning they had no opion but to change. However, it still seems a little strange they they 'get rid' of the job and manufacture them from steel now, Middleburn aren't exactly a company that needs to scrap the barrel to stay in business. This could also be a demand problem, they're getting more orders than they can cope with, ideally, they should bring out a Ti version AND a steel version...spread out the work a bit more. watto
Thats quite true anzo correct me if im wrong but don't they produce components for the formula 1 industry and by now means is that a cheap industry and is one of the most expensive sports in the world and most probably the dangerous.EDIT : We manufacturing for these industries UHV instrumentation gas chromatography aerospace breathing apparatus formula 1 racing sports equipment hydraulics pneumatics life support apparatus medical equipment electron microscopy laboratory apparatus data logging filaments Edited April 19, 2006 by watto
anzo
Wondering if the steel is treated. A few scuffs on it and let the rust take over, it will look bollocks. Are you sure they're actually scrappying ti rings and not just making steel 'as well as' to give a bit more of a range to their products? watto
It would have to be really, one bash and it would look a bag of s**t, sure it isnt aluminium either ?EDIT : Just looked on tarty its definatly steel, but also it says most popular cranks in the uk. So that kinda makes you think its not the fact that no one is buying them. "Please note: Middleburn have now discontinued the Titanium bashrings and they have been replace by a steel version." tank_rider
Pete, Ti is definately harder to weld than steel as it needs to be completely immersed in a certain gas (can't remember off the top of my head but neon rings a bell) which is completely different to alu.On the steel bach/rust front, i would be very suprised if it wasn't made from stainless steel like 99% of steel chainrings etc.
