To Buy Or To Build?

Recommended Posts

depends what level you are at. If you a new rider then buy a basic new bike, onzaor something and upgrade it as your progress and you will have parts to suit your riding needs.

If you are already at a pretty good level then you be best doing a custom build like most people do

what do you think! (Y)

I think you've milked the whole "this is my bike, what you think" thing for all its worth mate, so maybe answer the topic question rather than further showing off your average bike.

If your new to trials then its always better to let people who know how to set up a trials bike do it for you, i.e, buy a complete bike. But if you have a basic knowledge of trials bikes, and bike set up, then building from scratch allows you to set up the bike exactly how you want it.

Depending on which full set up you choose, the spec may be good enough to keep you going for ages, only changing parts which wear on any bike. If you opt for a cheaper one though, you will find that as you progress, parts will start breaking or holding back your riding ability.

At the end of the day, its up to you. But before you make any final desicions, have a good look round at all the shops for complete bikes, and for separate parts.

Hope i helped you decide (Y)

Got any more pics :-(N)

And yup go for your own bike, may work out a bit expensive at first but if you look around on here you'll be surprised at how cheap you can get things second hand. Also you get what you want as a bike which is always the better option.

I bought a bike ready built, brand new as a beginner. I would never recommend it, the cheapest of after market parts are better than any components already on the bike (from an Onza point of view).

I had a t-pro, which lasted about a month before things started going horribly wrong. Upon further investigation you discover the root cause, the componentry is shit. The parts are weak and just a waste of time.

Get the frames, but in my opinion, that is all Onza is good for. Anyway, if you buy a frame (brand new) you can built it up with second hand parts and have it a wee bit more expensive than a ready built, but minus all the hassle of upgrading a few months down the line.

Obviously this depends what bike you're considering, anything other than an onza and the components will be expensive (eg. Monty) although its a lot better quality (yet very over priced in my opinion).

So, to conclude, buy the frame and build it yourself, its cheaper in the long run.

Id advise buying a cheap frame, and buying your own parts, but dont buy top of the range stuff.

When i started i bought a mission frame with Hs33's and onza cranks, and this was a great place to start, cos they were better than stock parts u get if u buy whole bikes, though i admit the mission wasnt my fav,i dont think it hit the bank too hard either.

Then when u feel you are getting better and the part you have are holding you back, improve them, itstaken me 2 years to get a fully decent bike becuase i have improved it bit by bit.

Zoo bars are awesome, my mate has some, he had Onza carbon 30" before and he says the Zoo's are a lot better, plus you can get them in differant colours :P .

Well, i've only been riding since christmas, im sticking with my current (mission compo) bike through the summer, whilst saving money, and next winter im getting an IOLO frame built for me, custom paint job , Cameron mitchell down the sides in old english font, in white. and building it from there.

The t-mag should be ok - you get a decent disk brake and a disk wheel with it which saves you money in the long run. I got a t-pro with t-mag front end for £500 cos I never really liked the look of the t-mag frame

The first thing you should change is the forks cos the standard ones weigh about a metric tonne. It'll make a huge difference to how the bike rides (recommend Zoo forks cos I have them and they're nice) - If you want to get new bars you'll need a new stem as well because the standard onza one is a stupid size.

Zoo bars are a good choice - the funny shape allows you to get pretty much any feel you like out of them and they also look sexy.

Yerr thats the best idea because if you make your own bike and spend lots of money and dont like trials you have wasted a lot of money were if you buy a basic one you will always able to sell it if you dont like trials.
