CurtisRider
hello allim needing a bit of help deciding what computer to go for, im not very in touch with computers, i know the basics but thats it really currently i have a 5 year 1.6ghz pc, with gig ram and 160gig hd-shes getting pretty slow and last year i had the hardrive and the processor burnout i dont use my pc for games, cos well, thats what a playstation is for so im not fussed on having superb graphic handling shit, i just want something i can play dvds and stuff on, also editing videos too-so if i need anything extra to make them look thier best, then let me know i mainly use my pc for the internet, i want to use it as a tv (im looking into a decent tft screen-but i know what im looking for there), i play music on it, and i watch films on itim hopefully getting a new camera soon, so i want something thats happy with playing with large sized files, as ive found mine struggles a littlestorage wise i have alot of photos, music and videos on it, so far my harddrive has well over 100gigs of stuff, and i want to keep it all-will my hardrive be compatible with a new machine? or will i have to copy everyhting from my old 1 to a new 1?soooooo basically after reading all of that you should be able to have a rough idea of what i need, i dont really want to go and buy something with loads of features i wont use, it just needs to be fast enough to handle those kinds of applications really-dont forget the internet, tv/dvd, limewire etc need to be able to operate at the same time! as ive found mine cant handle doing just internet and limewire.... ive got around the 600 mark to spend on just the tower, is that enough? i dont want to spend all of that if i dont need to, so please keep that in consideration. i guess i will have to do a custom build, my friend can out it together for me, so thats cool i have probably missed something useful here, so sorry if i haveany help would be much appreciated, cheers paul
Haz
Why not just buy more RAM, sounds like you don't need anything much, but more RAM will give you some extra boost. 1Gb is only £70 or so, voila, saved yourself £530. More RAM would make it pretty good for video editing, that would be the main advantage, so seriously, put more into a nice TFT (possibly with built in TV tuner etc) if that's what you want. CurtisRider
i already have a gigs worth of ram, i dont know how much my motherboard can handle? as for more money towards a screen, i think 350 will be enough? i dont see the point in spending much more than that anyway
poopipe
screens...Don't buy a tft screen for less than £500 - they're shite. The response times and contrast are nowhere near what you need for any serious graphical work.I have a 19" iiyama CRT at home which cost me £250 about 2 years ago and it pisses on any affordable flat screen I've ever seen. The 21" samsung I use at work is almost as good (£350 ish last week sometime) but doesn't handle 1600x1200 anything like as well as the iiyama. For the machine http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products...sdt1&l=en&s=bsd- that's probably the sort of thing you want to be looking at (the precision workstations). Your main concern with video editing is hard disk speed / access times so you could downgrade the processor a little and dispense with the monitor / software bundles to get the price down. It's all customisable on the site. Don't be scared of Dell - the new boxes we're getting in at work are fooking excellent and they're very, very cheap. I mean it - I usually build my machines from scratch cos I have a very specific use in mind but next time I'm going to Dell for sure.
