bikerboy16
hi i was just woundering what to run on my bike gears or to get single speed kit what are the advantages and disadvantages Edited April 8, 2006 by bikerboy16
N.Wood
Single speed is lighter, and you only generally use one gear anyway.Gears allow you to get to places easier and have a choice for varying terrain. I'd go with 3 cogs on the rear with a mech, then see how you go.

Robwalker
I've found single speed to be a lot more reliable, you can get a nice tensionor and then it stops that awful banging of the deralier against the frame, and stops the chain from hitting the frame. And there is the obvious part with weight, it might not seem a lot but when you add up all the deralier, extra cogs shifters on your bars it all add's up! And you have to run an extra cable down your frame, go for single speed Its never let me down. Rob PS t-pro kid, not really helpful, this may help
Ben Geary
Depends really, like others have said if you use your bike to get around aswell then i would go with gears but if your always riding Trials and can be arsed with going round in one gear then go ss.SS is alot easier in my opinion, with gears there's alot more what can go wrong e.g. cables, mech, shifter, making sure that the gears are set up very well. With ss it's just a fit and a forget really, just wack the cog on stick tensioner/mech on align it all up and your ready to roll, ss also saves weight but who gives a shit about weight at the end of the day.Go SS. joe parker
get a single speed kit thre are so much better than gears cause gears have all the wires and stuff and also its proberly better not to have ever a extra lever on ur bars or a grip shift!single speed is a lot easyer to use as well! Simpson
if you do comps go gearsif you don't single speedhmm at my bike trails you can run single speed as some of those rules are becombing slightly outdated now because what people did was run carbon spacers which you could in "theory" use them but you wouldnt same with mods having to run a bash plate e.t.c. (i dont really know the rules i just ride by them )so yea..... i used to run gears but after so many clunks and jolts - also being flipped over the bars countless times i chose to run single speed - i didnt run any flashy kit just a load of spacers - it make it so much easiler and most people who ride with me (particualary rick) know my technical terms - my mech is fixed in one place - when you hit it i loose tension but with a 5mm and some hanger bending tis all good so much better - gears are for queers surley??? - and just means you have 1 cable not 2 looks far better and so much more reliable un cluttered bars e.t.c. but then again ive got a real thing with bits being tidy :$
