its a black chain you fool!! :P hahaha yeh bit familier! well used 4mm aluminium as a base then 6mm acrylic on top then just cut out and drilled holes in appropriate places! i was having probs with the fresh one so made this one. it has 2 holes to put the roller in place and a smaller rainbow shapped slot on the rear. makes life easier :)

I have to say, I hope you included the fresh products tensioner in you 'similar product evaluation' section, and made a bloody good job of changing it enough, as its far to similar in my opinion. I’m not saying it won’t work well, but im saying you won’t get as good a mark as if you had come up with a completely original idea.

I haven’t really had any probs with my fresh, so i don’t think there’s much to improve. making the slot smaller actually makes it less adjustable, so not as good in my opinion!

to me it looks like you’ve also just used the wheel from the fresh, and not used your own- again that wont help with marks!

sorry to be critical, I just don’t like people being lazy when my A level DT project was a scratch built radio controlled hovercraft- didn’t copy anything, just trial and error!

Nice job on the tensioner and the other DIY tensioners too!

Here are some that I've experimented with. If you've got the time then it's a nice project which can save you a fair bit of money. You can buy rollers from www.chainreactioncycles.com, or even better for a quieter and smoother drivetrain (rollers, although cheap don't match the shape of the chain so are notchy and noisy) try and use a sprocket like a recycled derailleur one.

^ This shows an example roller bolt you could use and the roller I bought from Chainreaction.

^ This shows the easily available nut and bolt you can use to attach the tensioner to the mech hanger (The mech hanger uses a non-standard thread which is annoying)

^ The version with a sprocket and chain guides on the bike (smoother and quieter than the roller set-up)
