CBProductions
Ok I used to run a rear acs on my old da bomb and throught my early morning silly thought wondered if I could do this with my toxsin and place my eno on the rear and have a cog or ring with a bashguard on the front with monty xlite cranks ? Would like some advice on this matter and also the pro's and cons of this.Cheers in advance Craig
Onza Kieron
You would need something rediculous like a 16t rear acs/eno/whatever and around a 24t front cog, which is'nt very practical. It's possible if you wanted though
wilky_mod_legend2
Well if your running front free wheel then, you must have been running a rear fixed cog, and if i remember correctly they are different thred sizes, so you cant just swicth, also 'da bomb' wheel was basicly a bmx wheel, wasnt very 'wide' and it was 14 mmbut the advantage of not running a ffw is that you dont rip millions of pairs of trousers.CheersWiLkY

CBProductions
Arr ok then , guess not that wise of a plan really,
poopipe
The only good reasons I've ever heard for running FFW are ....It allows you to run small cogs for clearance - which has been covered here. The other reason is that it allows you to adjust your pedal position when your chain is stuck on rocks or a log or something.
dave33
so cant you just run the 12t cog on the crank and the 16 eno on the rear?

Luke Rainbird
That would be hideous!Too light a gear even for trials24:16 on the other hand is lovely! It must be, I ride it!

JT!
The only good reasons I've ever heard for running FFW are ....It allows you to run small cogs for clearance - which has been covered here. The other reason is that it allows you to adjust your pedal position when your chain is stuck on rocks or a log or something. It also keeps the wight centralised on your bike. But that's about it. Also, if you get anything bigger than an 18T on the front of most mods, they don't clear the bashplate.so cant you just run the 12t cog on the crank and the 16 eno on the rear? To work out your 'gear ratio' you take the No. of teeth of the front cog and divide it buy the No. of teeth of the back cog. The normal gearing for a mod is 1.5, (18t front divied by 12t rear.) If you have a 12 on the front and a 16 on the rear, you'd have a gear ratio of 0.75, making it insanely low.what a superb idea....If you going to post sarky comments like that, hows about following them with a explenation? Jez
Don't forget crank length has an effect on perceived ratio. It's harder to pedal with short cranks than with long (effecively giving you a higher ratio), if you have shortass cranks (the ones on my old x-lite were well short) then you'll need a lower ratio.Just don't ask me how much lower, I ain't got thw foggiest
CBProductions
So in theory I could put a longer length crank on there and increase the length of my ratio so it makes it slightly harder ? I really shouldnt think this much
JT!
So in theory I could put a longer length crank on there and increase the length of my ratio so it makes it slightly harder ? Forget about crank length, it dosn't actually change the gear ratio, if just feels different. Stick to a 1.5 gear ratio.
