downhill_rob2@hotmail.com
I have just ordered a new UCI style bash (tensile ) and a new freewheel. So i have tryed to get my old freewheel off my crank without a freewheel tool. Its welded, so i have ground the the freewheel shell off (the teath) and stripped it totally down to the inner body (the black bits the only part left on the crank arm)Iv tryed EVERYTHING! from heating it intill its nearly glowing red, to using my dads expensive loosening spray.Iv used stilsons, ground a little noth in it and used a chissel.. everything but the little bastart wont f**king move!!!! Im so pissed off about it!!! How can i get it off?P.S, yes i am turning it the right way

Dan6061
Clamp what's left of the freewheel in a vice. And twat the crank arm with a rubber mallet?
Mark W
I've found that typically, it just goes to shit when you do that. With my Eno (Angle grinding two flats into my Eno was the most upsetting thing ever ), I basically ended up hammering it out of the vice. Then I tore the vice in half. No joke. Sheared it.You may have to just resort to cutting it off. If you cut down towards the threads, and go very slowly and carefully, you should be able to get it almost to the point where you're at the threads, at which point you migth be able to get a hammer and screwdriver in there and shatter it off? BikeDotStuffAtOnzaDotCom
Clamp what's left of the freewheel in a vice. And twat the crank arm with a rubber mallet?Everyone's too damn fast for me.Mark's been there fairly recently, I do know that.... how's the Tensile freewheel surviving? You might need a very fine spacer to space the freewheel slightly away from the bash if the freewheel catches on it. Mark W
Hey,Tensile's going good. It's stopped raining for the first time in 8 days today so I got to have a quick ride in between showers Terror - if you DO need a spacer for your crank, let me know and I can send you one. I've got a spare one here, so it might as well be used for something.

Al_Fel
I took 2 freewheels off two pairs of cranks today very proud of myself lol. Its so easy when you've got the tool and bolt it in place.the only thing I can suggest is leverage makes so much difference.

With the correct tool, and a decent extension bar, taking off freewheels is pretty simple. It's just like childbirth, one big push and you're done. grantham
I found the best a quickest way to get a freewheel off is as anal said, bolt the tool down to the freewheel/ crank not mega tight, but tight enough, clamp the tool in the vice ( a decent vice) then slide a 2-3meter scaffolding pole down the crank arm, will come of easy then. downhill_rob2@hotmail.com
I cant beleive it I went out just then, put the stillsons on, and get a extension bar (4 foot) and whacked that on the end of the stillsons, and it screwed right off MINTO!!!Now just to wait for new freewheel and bash to come.Im really worried that the bash and freewheel might not fit though My freewheel might not be screwed on enough, and might just rip the threads off the cranks? Mark W
It won't rip the threads unless you've got a tiny, tiny amount of freewheel on there. I know loads of people on here have run a bashring + freewheel and they'll have 4mm or so of freewheel hanging off, and it's still fine. Worst comes to worst, try filing the inside of the bashring down a little so it's narrower on the threaded part of your cranks, if you don't have a "UCI" crank setup?Either way, it's no big deal

Al_Fel
Heating the freewheel/cog/crank threads up!?whats wrong with that?the ally cranks expand quicker than the steel freewheel thus making it tighter?
