David
Hey, Basically I dont know much about motorbikes at all. How would I go about getting a license? (DVLA?) How much are they to insure, tax? What cc can I have? And how much would a simple "Beginner bike" cost?As much info as possible please thanksdave
Simpson
so your 17for that you can only ride a max of a 125cc before you take you motorbike test at 17to ride the 125 you must take a CBT - Certifyed basic training or certifyed bike test dont know which its a peice of piss just dont break the law for half hour and you get your licence - its VERY hard to fail it - know of friends who nearly caused a fatal accident but got away with it because "it was a thurday morning"the CBT is about £90 and lasts 2 years - just need a bike and insurance after that!!!! good luck!!! Rob_P
Yeah CBT will be fine for a 125cc or you can do your full bike test which costs about £60-90 (depending on how good you are) in lessons, £20 for a theroy test and £50 for final test. Then for 2 years you can ride anything up to 33bhp. This is what I did and im riding a 600cc at the mo Depends on what you want and how much mola you have really. David
Sound Mint How long does a CBT test take and do you need lessons? (Approx price?) Erm I dont have a clue about what motorbikes are good and what to go for? I would want something fairly cheap (under 125cc) Any ideas? Rob_P
You dont really want anything LESS than 125 as it'll be slow as sh*t A CBT will take the best part of the morning and some afternoon. You dont need lessons, it's just sorted in one.Do it on a rented scootay (bout £30 extra) So to do CBT would cost you about £120 If you want a crosser type style look at Yamaha DTs
David
Thanks for all the help Any ideas on how much insurance would cost for a 125cc?
Rob_P
As you don't have any no claims it'll be about £600? maybeRing Carol Nash, they'll be the cheapest.Or for a rough idea do an online quote on bennets

Steve-A
Insurance wise go through www.motorcycledirect.com. Thats who I went with for my 125 and it worked out good. To insure my Honda Xr125 it was £285, that was my first bike, so 0 no claims. Which 125 you get and its styling ( Race or off road etc) will make a large impact on your insurance. Have a look on the net for the insurance groupd for different bikes you want. Road tax is £15 a year on my 125, so not really an issue. If your interested I'm selling my XR [attachmentid=3191]
Rob_P
That would be an awsome first bike
Lawnmowerman
You can get piaggio nrg' to go about 60. Just deristrict, new pulley weights, re-jet the carb and a decent reed block and possibly a decent exhaust like a doppler or endy. Insurance for those is about £300 third party and a decent second hand nrg will set you back about £
Steve-A
Or just buy a 125 motorbike, instead of a scooter and, in my case atleast, do 60 comfortably as standard and 70 with a nice long flat run. With same sortta price insurance. Scooters dont seem worth the effort.
Lawnmowerman
Yeah i know what you mean but if he hasnt got a clue about bikes then he might not want to start on a 125 geared b*****d. Might be better off trying a moped for a few months and then part ex for something a bit bigger when he's learnt how to ride.

My mate had one, was so funny...was like a little pork chop sat on a snail. Yeah Gears can be had at first but whats the worst that's going to happen?Just go practise in a quite area going up and down and it'll become piss easy. The way to get around it is to think the theroy in you head, it's like this:65432N1first to second is one click up, first to Neutral is half a click. The just up up up, slow down...down...down down etc.Tis well easy once you've got the hang on it, after a week you'd be a pro
Lawnmowerman
The nrgs we get in at work tend to be ok. I prefer the 125 typhoons though, theyre fun hehe
Simpson
i wanted to get a aprillia RS125 when i turn 17 with 1 years no claimslike £1300 ok looks like ill have to be on something a lot more sensiblebecause that aprillia would do quite well on motorways and would be able to go out with my dad and have him not getting too pissed off. Because at the moment 30mph on a 1996 honda is a bit boring on his bike. i mean i wont keep up with him but it will reach the top end of the "legal" speed limit quite happilybecause if i get a 125 which does 60mph not too safe on A roads as you cant totally keep up with the traffic
Steve-A
You couldn't go on motorways untill you passed you test anyway, by then most people want something more than a 125, so I wouldn't really think of that as a consideration. I think...Oh and don't try bennetts. They're f**king extortionate!
Rob_P
Well the first year on my TZR 50cc was £600 TPFT and the second year £450 although I was 16My CBR is now £400 TP only with 2 years no claims.Yes Bennets are expencive, thats why I said Ring carol nash but to get a ROUGH idea go do an online quote with bennets. Dai the Socket
Yes Bennets are expencive, thats why I said Ring carol nash but to get a ROUGH idea go do an online quote with bennets. As you HAVE to ring Carol babe Yeahh. I got £3400 TPFT from Bennets, and £645 is from Carole You're right though. Nash is the bessst.Just read all through the posts and might as well give you my input. You're the same age as me which is easier. At 17 you can either ride a 125cc with L plates after a CBT or 33bhp bike (and cc capacity) like Rob on his CBR600 or my GSF600.Restrictor kits vary but they're about £180 fitted for mine.If you do want to get a motorbike that's a big one ie 400 / 600cc ish, then You'll need to take your CBT (£110 ish) and then Cat A test. Depending on how good you are, you'll need 6 - 12 hours worth of lessons which is quite expensive, plus your theory test, plus your bike test.Clothing will be from £200 - 500 depending if you want good makes, waterproof stuff, bottoms, boots. Mine cost £480 for a Shoei Raid 2 helmet, some Weise jacket and pants which are waterproof, Sidi boots and some gloves.Tax for anything from 125 - 600cc is £45 I think. and 600cc and over is £60 a year. Mots are about £30 each, but bikes which are under 3 years old don't need one every year. That's about all the information i can give, not sure if I'm just repeating what Rob's said as I know he knows lots about this kinda stuff. I've passed my theory and got my practical on the 6th of April. Well scared!I've got msn so just PM me if you want anything else Nick Carter
