STEVE-0
I have screwed my front brake and only really need a front lever replacement because the master cylinder is dead. Although i have really been tempted to get a disk, espically ridding natural in wet weather. On the other hand i dont have any disk mounts on my super smooth onza hub (weird as it sounds, its so smooth and light ). Then again i could also get a lighter nicer front rim while I'm at it....hmmm .I dont know what to do...and have even less idea what Disk and Hub i would get if i decide to change. Although initially i was thinking American classic disk hub £39 and hope mono trial brake £127 = £168 Mybe a Avid from the juicy range or and Magura (MARTA...)ThanksSteve So...I wanna get a disk but i need some help deciding what parts! I heard some bad things about the Avid BB7 so am abit weary of getting one and i would prefer a hydraulic disk, maybe the juicy five which i heard is nice. And as for hub Im going to get the American Classic unless anyone who's better? I like it....cause its lightCheers Again. Josh Greenan!!!!!!!!!!
I would get a new wheel mate, you can get a hope xc hub in blue and a hope mono disk.
Sam Nugent
IMO disks perform better and also look a lot better. Although a well set up rim brake can be just as good.If I were you I would go for the Hope XC front hub and Hope Mono Mini/Trial front brake. That's what I did/am half way changing to do. And it is ace Hope I helped,Sam
downhill_rob2@hotmail.com
front rim brakes can be VERY unpredictable!IMO, i prefer disks on the front, because every maggy on the front i have had, was either on-off, eat my pads in like 1 front rolling gap, crap, shit one day, then suddenly amazing and chucked me over! With my disk, it has never really gave be greif apart from when i first got it and wasnt too used to the power Get a disk! Swize
Get an Avid disc and save £££ over the hope mono trials.
RicH_87
juicy seven and all your front braking prayers will be answered.
Sam Nugent
Get an Avid disc and save £££ over the hope mono trials. An Avid disc doesn't necesarily save £££ over the hope mono trials..... I don't think
BeNNy
Yep, I would say go for a disk I have a Magura Louise and its great,It works alot better than my old hs33 on the front, the pads dont wear down as fast.Benny
Tom Booth
An Avid disc doesn't necesarily save £££ over the hope mono trials..... I don't think Can save a good 50 quid if you chose the right lever.I swapped form a magura to an Avid bb7, and i dont regret it. I bought a new front wheel and disc from crc,was 160 for everything. Hope xc on a mavic 321, and an avid bb7 and avid speed dial 3 lever. Only thing i wish i had done differently is the lever, Got to go with an xtr/ultimate lever on these brakes. They feel so much nicer, The whole brake seems stiffer.Tom
Simon
My XTR front v-brake > any other brake. Fact. Actually, i lie, my front Deore was the best brake i ever had, no flex, solid as a rock, modulation as well as being sharp as f**k. Standard deore pads too.Learn to setup a brake properly and you'll have a perfect front brake without spending 168 great british pounds. Also, a disk is just as un-predictable as any other brake, if not more. My friends disc will work one day, not the next, half work the day after, then be shit hot the next.

My friends disc will work one day, not the next, half work the day after, then be shit hot the next. But riding in the rain? Discs on average are far better, and they are far more predictable in as much as they stay the same unless they are hit etc. Where as a V-brake is more susceptible to pad wear, weather conditions, and mechanical fault. Although it is initially quite costing to get set up with a front disc, in the long run it is defiantly worth it, as you will not need to have to replace your pads, and you will have bought a long lasting front hub. Thats my opinion anyway. Ian
Simon
True, although my v works better in the rain.
flipkickbs
True, although my v works better in the rain. Do you not get nasty pad slime all round your rim from riding in the wet?
downhill_rob2@hotmail.com
The only thing that moves on a disk brake, is the lever and the pads... unless its mechanical then it has a little swing arm thingy. Works AMAZING in wet/dry/ice/snow any weatherLots of things move on a V-brake... 2 calipers, lever, pads... works good in wet (as simon says )2 things can move on a maggy... pads, lever, BUT works bollocks in the rain/wet, pads wear down quick, can mess up easily.GET A DISK
Swize
An Avid disc doesn't necesarily save £££ over the hope mono trials..... I don't think Yer it really does. Avid bb7 £60 or if you get one off ebay even cheeper. Frount wheel :Rim £30Hub £37 Spokes £10Brake: Cable £ 2 Lever ££ depends on which one I came from a frount vee to a disc best thing I have done. I know someone that swaped from an Hope mono trials to an Avid and he says its better offers more power etc.Go Avid you will save ££ and have an awsome brake. petit_pablo
I found i couldnt get enough power out of my front maggie.Swapped to a hope mono trials and its superb, hold my weight easily and is very reliable
Tomm
IMO, get a disc. I'm a fan of Avid stuff, so I'd recommend them. Either the BB7 or the Juicy, it's your call. To be honest I reckon the BB7 is more powerful, although the Juicy feels much smoother (like the Hope trial). If you want a Juicy, On-one still have them for £100 (front 185), but they don't have any BB7s left unfortunately.
Matthew62
I'm in a similar predicament, and am really unsure what to do. Stupidly when i bought my koxx frame kit a few months ago i picked the 4 bolt mount forks rather than disc, so i have a disc hub, but no mounts. I don't like my magura on the front, yesterday when i was riding it was slipping all the time, and the pads just munch away, and i cant even get them all that close to the rim as the forks are pretty wide.I do really want a disc and could just about justify buying one and losing the magura, but new forks would be needed. I like my koxx forks but thats like £120 or something for some new ones, add that to the disk and its getting costly.Really not sure what to do.................... ogre
if you can afford it why not? they look ace! and the pads last longer to...
Matthew62
I'm not too bothered whether it looks better, i want it to improve the set up of my bike, to feel confident in actually using my front brake, to be able to go down a hill without jumping off to save my pads, which once died in under 10 seconds. I may be able to exchange the forks as ive spoken to Koxx as the mounts seem off, the mounts seem almost welded for a 24'' wheel. Does anyone know much about the Hope Try all front brake, the guy at cleannbikes was unsure of what caliper number it was and what disk size would be needed with koxx forks. He said i'd need a 160 disk, but shouldnt it be 190? He also wasn't sure if the brake ws any different to the mono/trial, is it just a pimped version of the brake?Cheers. AdamR28
If you're ruinning 26" forks, then you'll need a 190mm rotor and a #5 caliper for the front. The Try-All/Hope brakes only come in #5 caliper version, its just that the +30mm mount on the 26" forks makes the brake require a 190mm rotor (160 on a mod). The brake's workings are all identical, its just the anodising colours, the rotor and the laser etchings that are different (oh, and the price!).CheersAdam
Matthew62
Cheers, thanks for answering my quiery, i just rang you guys with the problem. I asked cleanbikes.co.uk if they could swap the forks as the mounts on mine are wonky, but they rang koxx, and i got a big fat 'non' from them. So i'll be buying some replacement forks and disc from you guys in the next few days. Just to clarify, with the try all brake, do you get the try-all rotor as standard? I mean if im going to have to blow money on identical forks, whats an extra few quid for a bit of a red brake!!? Also to clarify, the try all brake from you guys was it £165 or £175.Thanks for all the help!
dave33
if you want the best disc in terms of power the marta kicks the hope all day long, but they arnt so reliable as the hope so over all i think id go for hope, as my marta has started leaking randomly 3 times in 6 months
