Ive got a friend who is designing a bike that can be recycled so he is looking at plastics etc.

anyone got any idea of how you could create a frame from 1 mould.

raleigh cycle throw away hundreds of bikes, if they could be plastic then they could be recycled.

also, any idea what disc brake pads are made of?

cheers for help. x x x

The frame could be made out of plastic and this would be made by injection moulding but then it would be solid i think...

Its a tough one i will think and get back to you with and if i come up with something (Y)

Surely he could use metal anyway as metal can still be recycled.....

Yup, whats wrong with recycling metals?

I very much doubt raleigh just 'throw away' their frames, even if they are badly damaged. Material wastage is a huge factor in the manufacturing business, and most will do their best to keep it to an absolute minimum, that which would be wasted, is usualy sent to a recycling plant, and most business get paid for doing this.

Your mate would be better thinking about the logistics of building a plastic bike, and it's expected lifespan (bout 5 minutes, once you jump off a kerb.) the cost of making a plastic one piece frame just wouldn't justify doing it.

Im pretty sure you could do do something with plastics - if you started looking at racing car or airplane materials you'd probably find all sorts of mad stuff thats super strong, weighs nothing and is recyclable.

carbon frames are probably a good place to start stealing ideas - they don't injection mold them but I've seen a load that are 1 piece

I found some differant types of bikes e.g bamboo which is strong and light i have also found a gt that uses plastic tubes with carbon fibre fittings so it is possible and strong enough but i was trying to find out if i could do a one piece mould. thought about injection moulding but want hollow tubes still plastic tubes would be like broomsticks. Dont know if i could use blow moulding?

you could use rotational moulding, means that you get an even spread of the material and it makes hollowform shapes, dont know about strength though. could you not use a mixture of rotational and injection moulded sections for the head tube and bottom braket area and use drawn tubes for the main frame and just bond them together? plastics aren't that easy to recycle and they cause a lot more pollutants than other materials to produce.

a glass bottle takes less energy to produce, can be more easily recycled, adn produces a lot les pollutants during manufacturing and recycling.

so other materials may not be as flexibile in maufacturing terms but have a look at other alternative materials.
