9sp Shifter

Couldn't agree more.

Just to clarify, 9 spd has a different cable pull to 7/8spd. If you want to run 6 speed on the new Hope trials hub, then with a 9 spd shifter, you'll need a 9spd cassette with an additional spacer. If you're on 7/8spd, then you don't need the additional spacer, but you do need a 7/8spd shifter.

Obviously in both cases, you'll need to take some cogs out to make it fit!

ye, thats how it goes. they will sort of ghost shift a couple of gears with a 9spd shifter and 8speed cassette spacing :Plol. im trying it with my hope 6speed and a 9spd LX shifter. :P it will work near enuff for me, at least i will have a shifter and a mech on to make it look like there are gears there. they will work (in a fashion :P ) maybe two clicks to one shift, for a couple maybe 3 of the gears ;)

I am trying to sort the gears on my hope as well, its proving tricky.

I think I have an 8spd cassette, but I cant remember for sure, I am using a narrow kool chain too and I cant get it to stop skipping! I have just about got it running smoothly in my preffered gear, but I aint too hopful about the others working well

(I am using a 7 spd friction shifter too, so that cant be the cause.

ali i am having the same problem, if you have got a 9spd mech on you need to use a "spacer" between the jockey wheels, like the spacers used to space your hope disc, i did mine yesterday before going out riding and it has worked. its always "ticking" as if it wants to change gear (even though mine was singlespeed for a bit) but its cos the mech is quite narrow (Y):)

right i got a 9sp ultegra cassette and a 9sp dura ace chain... getting a new mech tomorrow. i want them to work cause i might just keep them on... i do have to ride 5 miles to work/good riding you know:p should work allright, if not i will just get a 6sp shifter from a local bikeshop... who knows.

and i dont know why it didnt post the actual thread... just the title... strange.

i had the same problem when i bought my 6spd echo hub and my wide kmc chain.

mine was fine when i pedal kicked or did short(half) pedal strokes but as soon as i pedalled fully it skipped.

i firstly spaced out my cassette

i then spaced out my mech with some small washers. ( i got the mech off selectbikes)

and it was still skipping. so i bought a surly sprocket off tartybikes and its solved it.

make sure your chain is really tight aswell

took me about a month to solve it but thats how. hope that helps

To be honest, there's a standard spacing for 6, 7 and 8 speed kit. All they did each time was make the cassette/freewheel a cog wider each time, and brought the hub flanges closer together. All Shimano and SRAM have done these days is make the spacers and chain thinner to cram in 9 and now 10 sprockets into the same space.

Irrespective of how expensive stuff is, if it's Shimano compatible then a 6 speed shifter won't match a 9 speed cassette. The only exception is if you want to run in a single gear and you don't care about how well the indexing works on different cogs.

If you're running a thicker chain then avoid 9 speed cassettes as I'm convinced the cog spacing can and will cause problems. I think that running older, lower quality stuff is the way forward as you get thicker cogs and a decent gap between each one. The only problem is you have to source old kit, shifters, cassettes and so on.

Old quality is hard to find, but I'm getting a good hoard together. Once I've got the stuff ready for my new bike, I'll stick a post up.

grr I hate this time of the year having to fit gears :(

What I found worked well when i went to the worlds, get one of the old style kids shifters, thumb shifters i think they are. where you just push it one way to tighten the cable and the other to loosen, none of the indexing stuff, easy to set up. (Y)

Have you locked your mech out Ali? If so its not resting to far back, so theres not enoug chain rapping round the cog? Maybe worth a try? just undo the bolt and pop the elbow of the mech closer to the frame.

Thing I learnt when i switched back to gears, buy EVERYthing from 1 brand, im runnin a shimano tiagra mech, deore shift, 8 speed hg-70 cassette, And it runs smooth as pie. Maybe try your local old man bike shop, see if hes got a 6 speed casette and shifter?

I am using a sram x7 with a shortened cage, its not locked, but they have a design where it doesnt bang on the chainstays, so it doesnt need locking in that sence. I dont really want to lock it anyway, makes getting the wheel out a pain.

I might just get some singlespeed specific cogs for each gear, the deeper profile would help I recken.

ali sounds like (the rest of your block is nakerd) apart form the gear you use to ride and the chain is ok on the "1" gear you use, if thats how its working, if you have got 5 new cogs and your old cog and old chain it will slip cos the chain stretches. i noticed it with mine, but im not going to try ride around in the other gears just the 16 @ the back.
