fredrico
I might be getting a 24" frame made for me but i can not decide whether to have it made out of aluminium or steel. It will be based on the geo of the Ashton ET and will be used for a street muck around bike. I have had a look at the good and bad points of both metals; ALuminium: light but if it cracks then cant have it rewelded. Steel: Heavy but can be rewelded. Thats all i can think of so what do you think i should get the frame made out of? Cheers Edited March 12, 2006 by fredrico
TomN
Get a Leeson, cheap and also not very heavy. Plus get it reweld and all that
Ashley Smith
steel is real, nice and thin tubes with small diameter look pimp at the moment ash
Luke Rainbird
Look at what's been done before:Ashton - rides like a beast but few strength issuesLeeson/Curtis - Awesome! Little more weight but not a problem.I say go steel, especially if is custom, as can have it exactly as you want it.Oh, and if it's cheap, give me a shout! Hobnobs
Aluminium, if you make it right it wont break. At least for a few years a la zoo frames.
fredrico
Ok i'm swaying more to steel because of the strength and reweldability. I have got my geo written out and a design drawn out now all i need to do is get the rest of the money and talk to the builder. cheers Edited March 12, 2006 by fredrico
Wayne-king
theres quite a few more "good and bad points" than you have stated!
Brian Bleech
Steel- easier to weld- easier to work with- repairable - nicer 'feel' imoaluminium is great too, but unless you know someone who is a very good aluminium welder it isn't worth it for a custom job. Even then, the fact that (pretty much) anybody with a welding torch can repair steel (without affect strength) gives it an advantage in the custom stakes. Houseface
go for steel because if you go aluminium your only going to spend more money IF it breaks steve.
steve sturt
Steel every time. A good steel like Reynolds 853, wont be significantly heavier than an aluminium frame, something will 4130 will put the weight up by a pund or two, but you can lose that weight in things like tyres, drivetrain or not drinking at weekends. It wont matter too much what it weighs if it rides well enough.
