Not really. They could have at least tried to help. It seemed like they just couldn't wait to put the phone down.

E.G- They could have given me possible soloutions to find my serial number.

They probably get that sort of thing all the time and are proper sick of dealing with it. Also - strictly speaking (and im not 100% on this) XP is only licensed for the hardware you bought it with. If you buy a boxed copy for £300ish you can use it anywhere but if you get it free with the machine (or as an OEM version with a hard disk etc) it's only really legal to use it on the hardware it came with. Of course nobody pays any attention to that and it's entirely possible to swap the hardware out without fooking it - provided you don't lose your activation key - which you did.

To be fair though. The whole licensing thing is filthy, I hate the fact you don't get a full copy of the OS on CD with a machine when you buy it because this is exactly the sort of thing that happens to people.

You could try calling up the people you bought the machine from in the first place to see if they keep a record of the activation codes they send out with the machines but otherwise you're basically buggered
