Martin Grainger
hi, i was just wondering if the shape of the caliper changes shape as the size of the rotor changese.g. could i buy a 170mm brake set and change the rotor to fitANDdoes anyone know what size the disk mounts are on monty x-lite forks, (i think it is like 2003 or something, they are chrome i think ) Edited March 11, 2006 by Martin Grainger
Krisboats
I don't really understand what you mean so i'll let you know how it all works.Your forks should be an international standard mount, so most discs will work with them so long as they're international standard calipers. The calipers are specially designed to work with a specific rotor size, thats why you can buy them in different sizes from the shops, so the calipers and rotor match accordingly... when you buy a new disc you also need to buy an adapter if its a bigger disc (obviously you can't get adapters to run big calpiers on smaller discs because it physically can't be done) the caliper won't just magically change shape to fit your new bigger rotor like you seem to think it would.so basically new bigger rotor = adapter needed to make your caliper fit.adapters are available in +20mm and +40mm, which adapt your caliper 20mm and 40mm bigger than it was designed to be... so if you have a 160mm caliper and disc and buy a new 180mm rotor you will also need to buy a +20 mm adapter Edited March 11, 2006 by Krisboats
dave33
yes mate disc brakes come in differnt sizes and all sorts, normaly the callipers are numbered with hope systemsthe disc mount should be iso fitting, but if its not you could change the rotor to make it fit, or get an adaptor
Martin Grainger
yer, thanks sorry for it being so hard to understand, i know nothing about disk brakes though (as the topic shows )one more question, ive been told that i could run a 165 rotor on a 160 caliper, true? (does 5 mm make a difference or could i run a 165 disk on a)
dave33
depending on what make as others have more/less clearance but if it 160 then you run 160mm rotor, if you want to run a larger rotor say a 180mm then you could buy a +20 adaptor and a 180mm rotor
