I always use Movie Maker to compress my videos, it works so well and is so simple too. I tried that Windows Media Encoder 9 but it was poop and took absolutely ages to compress! I imported a file from Premier Pro and it was abut 500mb, got it down to about 30 with zero loss of quality or sound. (Y)

I used to use media player to play all my video files until recently when media player decided that all xvids will be played in black and white, i downloaded the xvid codecs again and that didn't work... the only thing that works temporarily is to re-install media player. Anyone know whats wrong with it?

I've started using media player to encode my videos and it does the job nicely, again i'm not a fan of media encoder 9 though.

Whats best for macs :-

A small bonfire.

I used WMM for all the zoo and echo vids. You do get a loss in picture quality, but it's quite difficult to notce.

ok i did that vince anf giacomo video which is 70mb, and i compressed it to 28.1 with no loss of quiality in sound or picture..

You will have lost some quality which is only noticeable under close observation , best codec out there at the moment for me is Apple's H264 and just maybe a divx codec if they ever remain stable.
