luke_jay
hi there, ive recently started oging to the gym, but just wandered if any other trials riders go, and have any specific exercises which they do to improve their riding? if so could you tell me so i can make up a little regime for each time i go cheers Luke
spunkey_monkey_boy
yes - stretch your ham strings before and after every ride, the more you ride the shorter they get until they pull your back out of place and cause all sorts of trouble. other than that just upper body endurance weights and swimming. go for a big ride (or do a comp) and see which bits of your body dont work as well as the rest and build em up...catch me when i have more time and i'll do you a training rota if you wanttom

poopipe
i tried taking my bike to the gym but they wouldn't let me in he he i just ride their car park. but seriouslylike the man says, stretch before and after rides - you have to do both or you might as well not do either. warm muscles are happy muscles.I eat cod liver oil cos my joints get painful after big rides (i'm old and i used to take a lot of drugs which isn't good for your body, so it could just be me)
JT!
I really don't think building your muscle mass up is really going to help.Trials is about exsplosive power, so stuff like boxing type training etc would be more benifical. That and running and cycleing.

James Quigley
Go out and ride some sea deffence rocks, if you have the opportunity that is.You can find easy lines as as your fitness builds you just make them longer. I have found that rocks help your endurance and stamina more than anything, plus when you get back on the street everything seems easier. However, if you're like me then you'll hate rocks and so listen to somebody else.Probably haven't helped you but I'm trying. I'm having problems with ass to the grass squats, my back rounds when i pass parallel and this explaind why i have such a problem. Do you have any specific stretching routine to recommend?stretch your ham strings 10 times a day by standing perfectly staight and then reaching down to touch your toes, i can only get just past my knees and dont push it til it hurts because that will just do damage, for gods sake dont bounce and hold the stretch for 20 seconds building to 30 seconds once your used to doing it. within 4 weeks you should notice a difference, pm me if you want any further infotom
THE trials commentator
you dont actually need to build muscle, its proven that if your cardio is good enough your muscles get stronger and more durable anyway.cardio will improve your stamina and generally make you feel stronger.weights arent needed.just use the cycle machine, rowing machine, running machine at the gym, maybe lift some light weights, but do lots of repitition,to build stamina.Thats pretty much what i used to do when training for mx,maybe a few heavier weights and some situps, but not a great deal of muscle building.Cardio is THE way foreward.Carlyou dont actually need to build muscle, its proven that if your cardio is good enough your muscles get stronger and more durable anyway.cardio will improve your stamina and generally make you feel stronger.weights arent needed.just use the cycle machine, rowing machine, running machine at the gym, maybe lift some light weights, but do lots of repitition,to build stamina.Thats pretty much what i used to do when training for mx,maybe a few heavier weights and some situps, but not a great deal of muscle building.Cardio is THE way foreward.Carl

SQuiT-man
http://www.biketrial.pl/?page_id=23Thats pretty interesting. So, summed up, on a study based on elite mod+stock riders, the mod riders were on average 3.4cm shorter, but had slightly larger arm and leg measurements around musle girth?I could sorta imagine that actually, looking at people like Benito, Dani Comas, etc
jamesb
Do free-weight training like push-ups, jumps, sit-ups, etc...And ride your bike a lot.Plyometrics all the way!I guess Vincent used to do free-weight stuff but now he just rides? I dunno.
steve sturt
I lift one pint weights. After 5 or six repititions, this excercise soon cathces you out. Also I excercise my lungs by depriving them of oxygen, and replacing it with CO2 and nicotine.I dont do any training. I just ride. Unless archery counts. David
As said before, Plyometrics will help a lot to increase the "Springyness" in your legs. Seargent jumps etc will help :
Endohopper
I love it when having done all this preparation , a rider will totally ignore the importance of hydration , then wonder why their hands are shaking and their muscles prematurely tired halfway through a ride . Ensure you take in enough water / fluid before and during a ride .

Ensure you take in enough water / fluid before and during a ride .I do. I drink plenty. Find it gives me a headache in the morning though. After a ride I normally drink about 4 to 5 pints of fluids. Am I drinking too much?
