hi,

i no there have been a fair few topics on gear ratios.........but anyway....

At the mo i am running 22:18 im thinking of changing to 22:19.

Im doing this because i just want to try a few out, and ive heard good and bad things about both of the gear ratios.

what do you guys think about the change of gear ratio...... ?

I've been thinking of going to 22th - 19th aswell, i've run 22th - 17th and it was alreet, but i preferd 22t-18th, i'm running 22th-18 now and i have found it's best for me.

I've been on bikes with 19th's rear and it just feels to easy like, i feel like a change with gear ratio's anyway.

Go for it if you feel you want a change etc etc.

where can i get hold of a rear 19 tooth cog, any ideas ?

I Run 22:19 and have done for 6yrs, i find its spot on. I run a middleburn upfront and a chris king cog rear. there avaliable in 19T here: Bromley Bike Co.

Im running 170mm RS7's too. its all personal preferance at the end of the day but you should take your crank length into account.

shorter cranks=bigger rear cog maybe.

hope this helps. (Y)

I've been running 22:19 for a while and decided to go with 22:18 seeing as thats what the majority of other riders out there use. I think it feels so much nicer, when i go on a 22:19 now it seems too light and i find it harder to put as much power through.

Give the 22:19 a try but i would think you'll find it's fine for hopping about on but not very good for gapping and other things. You can always change back if you don't like it :D

I've never complained about the price of a cog, are they that much?

My King Kog was £30 (with a Bromley Bike discount ;)), but to be fair the machining is awesome and it hasn't worn at all in about a year.

If you just need a standard one, take it off an old cassette, though it may well dig in to yo' freehub body.

without meaning to offend anyone....

dont listen to the people claiming 22:18 is ideal!

its not, its FAR too hard im afraid chaps!

22:19 is a good gear

for reference, this is how most commonly used ratios work out:

22/19 1.1578947368421052631578947368421

22/18 1.2222222222222222222222222222222

20/18 1.1111111111111111111111111111111

20/17 1.1764705882352941176470588235294

20/16 1.25

18/16 1.125

18/15 1.2

17/15 1.1333333333333333333333333333333

17/14 1.2142857142857142857142857142857

16/14 1.1428571428571428571428571428571

22/19 is gorgeous, although in MY OPINION, 20/17 is just that fraction nicer!

22:18 is more of a hard street gear IMO, it makes the bike feel very heavy and not very nimble. an easier gear will make the bike ride FAR lighter, and itll be a million times better on natural!

also, the EASIER gear will be better for taps, as you can use much more explosive power, than the more torquey 22/18!

to those who say 22:19 is too easy for rolling gaps, your simply not trying hard enough im afraid....

i can pedal gap 10ft running 22/19, which i think is a respectable distance! if you want to go bigger than that, just bunnyhop it!

as someone said, its also way way way nicer for short runup stuff!

basicly mate....

you can go 22:18 now if you like, i did, and i ran it for almost a year, and found it to be FAR better than 22:19, back when i wasnt so good, yet now my skills and techniques have improved, i find it FAR nicer to ride 20:17 or 22:19

try it if you will, but id SERIOUSLY recommend 22:19 or 20:17

i was just thinking about how hard it would be changing from 22:18 to 22:19, would it be hard to get used to the change of gearing..... ?

Did you who have changed gearing in the past struggled to get used to it .. ?

just like to know...........................

i have used 22/18...18/16...and 16/14.............they are all about the same.

in barcalona i snapped my 14t cog and sam from drop bikes kindly gave me a 15t cog :D, them guys sorted us out so much:p.

ever since then i have used 16/15 with 170 echo cranks. i couldnt go back to 16/14 now, but its just what people prefer, i couldnt say all you who dont run the same as me are wrong cause its the same with tyre pressures, personal preference.

yeah i use 16/14 most of the time but on rocks i prefer to use 16/15. just because i like to be able to pedal nice and easily up sklanted rocks etc

gona have to disagree about the ratios there matey!

18/16 and 16/14 are pretty similar, but 22/18 is WAY WAY WAY different to the other two! as the figures i posted on page 1 show!

i found 16/14 pretty nice, although im happier now on a fractionally heavier 20/17
