High Bb Vs. Low Bb

Im not trying to start a big argument which one is better here but i just need a bit of advice from people that have tried both

I have been riding a BT 6.0 for about 4 months but now im wondering if i should try a lower bb bike

I need to hear what people found varied between the high bb and low bb bikes....what are the advantages and disadvantes that people have found after using both styles.

from what i hear the high bb is good on the rear wheel and it is but its harder to tap and so on

the low bb bikes are better for taps but what else have people found better for other things?

I learned to tap on a high bb bike by the way and i never really rode my BT 5.0 much so i dont remmeber the low bb feel all i know is the high bb bikes.

Interesting topic, I myself cannot help you with that one but both myself and a friend of mine are looking at getting new bikes soon and this is something that neither of us knows a great deal about.

So i would be very interested to find out what peoples opinions on this topic are.

Thank you all in anticipation of your reply...

i don't know if this will help alot..but i ride mod..i have a t mag and my friend has a zoo python, his bike is so much nicer all around, and that has a high bb. It must have some similarities(sp?) with stock.

Well i bought a czar ivan about 4 months ago, at first it felt a bit weird but once i got used to the bike it felt really nice on the rear wheel. I started noticing that i had lost my taps, and my gapping wasnt as good. It felt like everything needed more effort, except riding rocks. I've now gone back to my old low bb bike, i have got my taps and gpas back, and i can sidehop bout 4 inches higher than i could on the high bb. In my opinion they are amazing for really technical rock riding, but i dont think there are any high bb frames that are perfect for street. I think that the chainstay length on most high bb frames is too small to make them feel nice on street, for a +60mm bb i rekon you would need 400mm chainstays. Anyway hope this helps, this is just my opinion though, feel free to tell me i'm talking crap. :P

Hey,

I have a zona zip wich has a slightly higer bb but it feals nice to tap and such.

A higher bb will make it nicer on the back wheel so if its control you are after high bb.

For example the adamant a1 has a huge bb rise but it feals so nice on the back wheel.

A lower bb may not feal quite as nice but will be easier to tap.

hope i helped

cheers

jaf :deej:

I can see the appeal of a high BB, more clearence and better two wheel handling on rocks logs etc. But you cannot do big drop gaps with a high BB. It simply does not work.

Sorry but that is bull shit!!! if anything ive seen bigger drop gaps on high bb bikes

...first i was on low BB,than i figure it out that i need longer bike.Last year in June i bought GU Typhon. Now i'm back on low BB,me and my mate swap frames, i have his ZOO! PItbull 04 1075mm WB and he has my Gu typhon 1095WB.

...what i found is that i can't gap on high BB,i have 20cm longer gaps with ZOO!.I can tap with GU,but with 100% concentration, bunnyhops, hoo hoas, gaps to front are easier with high bb(at least to me).Sidehops to me are pretty much the same on both bikes, but i've learned to do decent sidehop on high bb .Balance on the rear is easier with high BB,but now i don't have problems to stand still even on low bb,i think that high bb has helped me to learn this faster.

...i couldn't test differences like i would want to. :) We have to much of snow.If you have chance try different frame geometries to find what suits you.

...also found that newbies learns faster on high bb than on low bb-easier to balance.

tank, i beg to differ. given that my frame is the same my bb is +75 and wheel base is 1145 due to my unbranded forks. i agree with it feeling like more effort for everything to start with, especially taps. BUT i have had my bike since christmas and am now finding taps are getting better, gaps are becoming a doddle along with drop gaps and sidehops.

low bb and short wheelbase is great for BMX STREET style riding on a trials bike, but providing ur wheel base is adjusted to the bb height (not like a 1080 hi-fi, big mistake), then i think for street and comp the high bb has its advantages. just simply depends on ur style of riding.

I rode with Nick Vaughn (PRAWN) a few weeks ago, he previously owned a hi-fi, couldnt get on with it at all (wheelbase was too short for bb height), so went back to old frame. now when i rode with him , he had a go on my czar ivan, which as i said is +75bb and 1145 wheelbase. he said that it was nice to ride, and he liked it, but because of the hi-fi he's now put off high bb's.

If u go high bb, i would say that ur wheel base ideally needs to be longer.

EG: With a +20bb, u could run 1080 wheelbase fine (like a control or triton deema), but with a higher bb on a 1080 wheelbase, the bike feels alot shorter than +20bb with 1080 wheelbase, and therefore will feel horrible.

Best way to find out what you want, is to try other peoples bikes with different geometry and set-ups.
