ecarinsurance.co.uk, i use them , nick will most likely be using them as they were loads cheaper for his audi, and oli uses them i believe. dirt cheap and helpful. do you really need fully comp? is the car going to be worth the extra fully comp will cover you for and the extra cost it will incur? my insurance is just under 300quid tpft for a mk2 golf gti, 4 years no claims and 2 years driving.

try them (Y)

They are good, i use them for temp insurance on my dads cars and such. My rents also use them now.

Nick and i are with HIC however- AWESOME, but you have to be over 19. Specialise in minis/classics/modified. 2nd car discount, agreed values, the works.

Im on £605 for my golf, all declared. will go up slightly when i put an agreed value on it in a few weeks.

Nicks on ~£900 for his audi, and £205 for his mini as 2nd car, EVERYTHING (minus his remap) declared.

Right, been browsing the forum on www.clubpolo.com and have come accross people talking about mk3s having crossflow engines. What exactly does this mean? I know its something to do with the head, but thats about it. By the sounds of it I should be looking for a crossflow model if I want to tune it much, so does anyone know which models had it in them?

I tried wikipedia and google, but could only find stuff about a ford engine nicknamed the 'ford kent crossflow' and nothing about what a crossflow actualy is.

crossflow: gasses flow across the head. its really that simple

take the mini engine for example, its NOT cross flow.

inlet and exhaust manifolds on the back of the head, flows in one side, goes bang, and back out the same side.

on a cross flow engine, the fuel flows in one side, and out of the other side. i dont know totally how much difference it makes, but it all aids to the flow of gasses.

just about all engines these days are crossflow, although back in the 70's and 80's it was a much bigger deal.

nah, you can drive a van up to 3.5 tonne GVW at 17 on a car license, above 3.5 tonne and u need a c1 license which you need to be 18 for. but then you got tachos, medicals, operators licenses, 6 week checks etc. but for anything like a transit, youll be fine.

depends when you say old, how old we talking, 2000ish transits, can get you them reasonably cheap, many with uber low mileage(20-40k), other than that best of goin to commercial vehicle auctions, youll get a bargain or 3 there.

as for van insurance, im sure ecar insurance or whatever it is that seems to be popular with people on this forum, do e-van insurance or summit along them lines, be best checkin them, or goin direct through an insurance broker(because youve got special circumstances for having a van, insurance is high on a van due to the white van man image, the driving habits of people who normally drive them, and the fact they often have a lot of tools in them etc. of which you have none, your just gettin a van, as you occassionally need to move your bike around, your not using the van for work or anything like that.

Pre '94 is a mk11F (f for facelift), pre '90 is a straight mk11

I believe the last non-crossflow engine was the 1093, which died out it the mid 80's, the 1043 and 1272 are both crossflow.

Ah sweet. Thanks. Well it'll be pretty obvious with a simple lift of the bonnet if I go and look at one before buying it. (plenty of other stuff to check under the bonnet obviously.)

nah youll still be limited to 3.5 tonne on a car license, youll have to do a seperate medical, theory test(With a higher pass mark) and practical for a 3.5-7.5 tonne vehicle. but most of the vans you see around (lwb and swb transits are under 3.5 tonne, its only the real big stuff like 413 sprinters and the like that are above 3.5 tonne)
