nmt_oli
Went to no-rice last night, got to know a few new peeps and picked up some nice bargains!Leather seats (front only):256mm Brake set up (needs cleaning up):Also spoke to the guy with the porsche wheels, and we'll probably do a part ex. A few cars at no rice had the wheels on, i like them but they do seem to be a love or hate option on golfs. Also, interesting rat look bonnet idea! Someone suggested it previously and i didnt think it woudl look good, but it actually looks great. Pics not great quality unfortunately.Rust! Prawny Baby
oil you fecking pleb.......theres rat look, with matt black paint, then theres a f**king rusty shed.....the rust idea looks and sounds AWFUL. dont be a pleb, just spray the whole motor matt and itll look awesome with glossy bits!personally, i reckon the porsche wheels look RAD! nmt_oli
Nick, the rusts just an idea, and can be done easily on a seperate bonnet to try out if desired! The picture honestly doesnt do that car justice. The wheels do indeed look good, and have just sold my old mini wheels (the 12"ers i wont be using) so effectively its a straight swap, my two sets of wheels for the porsche ones and adaptors. The leather seats are nice, need a little bit of a clean. shame the dirvers one is quite worn (not quite as supportive as the passenger one). Might have to see if i can put the foam from another seat in it or someting. still, will be a nice edition and they are very comfy.EDIT:Some better Q pics from Adrian on no-rice forum.Mk2 slammed on 13x8 Minilights.Rusty bonnet again.Porsche Rims on Mk2: Edited February 15, 2007 by nmt_oli

RicH_87
personally i think ratty vw's should only be authentic. i.e don't rust panels on purpose just for the look. the only charm about the 'rat look' is that it's 100% authentic and a result of untouched wear and tear. Its like buying a new pair of trainers and jumping in a muddy puddle, they just look a mess, not like a faithful 10 year old pair. still think the porsche wheels look good though. also good place to post this...VW Bus Ball
nmt_oli
Personally I think ratty VW's should only be authentic. i.e. don't rust panels on purpose just for the look. The only charm about the 'rat look' is that it's 100% authentic and a result of untouched wear and tear.I have to say, I kind of agree with you there. The proper rat look is more "natural", but you will find there are not many rat look cars that are 100% authentic; pretty much all will be influenced in some way. The proper rat look also suits Air-cooled car much better than water cooled. The look I’m going for is more the hoodride look, it going to be neat (if I can get the dents out) just a matt colour, its also going to have the trim gloss painted. I’m trying to be a bit different really, experimenting on a budget. The bonnet thing is something I can do on a spare, and change if I don't like it. As I want my car to last, and be practical, I don’t want to have major panels rusting. Maybe it won’t work as well on my car, as on that example it’s contrasting against very good shiny paintwork- that is NOT a rat car. Some people love it, some hate it, but it does get attention. There's a massive debate thread on Edition38 regarding the Rat look, and should it be proper or not etc. People have really huge differences in opinion. My car is a daily driver, I don't want immaculate paintwork, and it’s harder to keep it looking good. I’m going for a different look, one I haven’t seen before. Someone (I think it may have been Fred) suggested a rusty bonnet, and I didn’t like the idea, but having seen it, it looks good. It wouldn’t work on some coloured cars that’s for sure. I’m spending a lot on the interior of my car, and will be sound deadending it, to make it comfortable. Currently my car does have the proper rat look, dents, hammerite splodges, rust spots, but due to the age of the car it will never look good from that. I want people to see my car and not see it as a heap of junk with some alloys (like it looks now); I can't afford a mint paintjob, so I’m taking a risk on an idea with influences from the hoodride and rat scene, and the OEM+ brigade. Everyone’s opinion differs, not everyone will like it, but it will be respectable- something that nick pointed out to me. My car as it is, and possibly a 'proper' rat look car could be seen as a shit box car, if I turn up for interviews etc like that it doesn’t set a great first impression. I know I probably shouldn’t care what people think of my car, its mine after all- and that is the deciding factor- but the truth is I do care, not many people can say they don't care what others think to some extent. That’s why I’m posting my ideas here, trying to get a feeling of opinions, judge peoples responses. I’m still doing it for me, but sometimes you can be blinkered when you’ve got a project. For example, when most young guys buy a mini they instantly want big wheels and sportspacks, which kind of ruins the car, and invariably regret it later when it’s too late, panels have been cut etc.Realistically, my golf has minimal resale value, there are much better examples out there, I have crash damage, and rust- I would get much more than the cars worth if I broke the car. You may say why don’t I just get a new car? Ive invested in this one, it has a years T&T and most major things have been done, it’s a good reliable motor. I enjoy my projects, doing something like this is fun. I’m not going to be able to afford a real nice car till after uni, so I’m not going to try. Insurance is fun enough as it is; even though I’m 20 I’m still looking at 3550-£700 for this year TPFT, as I only have 1 full year driving (medical reasons) and 1 year no claims.I want to make my car unique, comfortable and practical to get me through uni. If I muck up on this project, I live and learn, no great loss. Blimey, that turned into a bit of a rant! Basically, I agree with you, but I still want to give it a go! Small turbo big power.... (I like saying that, but its big turbo ready if the ko3 dies) Spikes @ 21psi...with the N75 (yes J valve) the turbo boosts to 20psi very quick , almost instant with the small turbo, starts boosting 2700rpm...the N75 valve makes the curve smoother and longer, slowly drops to about 10psi a smidge over 6000. But you shift I the power range not taking it to redline. Didn't notice any vibrations with the dog bone...shifting seems clean and crisper...noticed big change in power transfer lag.+Cheers for the compliments I love my car...may just be american prices but I really have spent alot of money on the car. Saying that I always new my car pulled silly hard in 2nd and 3rd.The only time I've had limp mode was before I install the turbo inlet and down pipe....seemed like the car/turbo was getting too hot.Best part about it is, my dad would usually be telling me its too fast, its a waste of money and petrol....I still get 28mpg lovin it (he kind of respects me for building a true drivers car, not some slammed, doesn't handle, petrol guzler), kinda why I dont want to change anything motor wise. Waddy
got my new wheels yesturday, £37 with toyo proxies well chuffed, although one has a puncture, but thats only a frew quid to fix, will be fitting new head gasket, radiator, gear relay shaft and new rear wheel bearing at the weekend, and hopefully be getting some vr6 calipers from the scrappers. does anybody know what i will need off of the vr6 to run the brakes on my mk2?,, will i just need the calipers and bracket, or will i need the hubs aswell?.. nmt_oli
If the Vr6 ones are the 288 you may have problems. I am not sure of how compatable they are, i think the 288mm disks are only available in 5x100 wheel bolt pattern for the mk3 VR6.I am upgrading from 239mm (8v gti) to 280mm (G60) calipers and need hubs, carriers, calpiers, 22mm master cylinder. If you have a 256mm set up (16v gti) already, then you will have the correct hubs and master.

nmt_oli
Ok, this weekend just gone has been spent tinkering with the mini on saturday (see mini thread), and tidying my workshop on sunday ready for the work happening this weekend. Its quite scary how much stuff, tools and parts, i have accumulated in a year since i gained my workshop.Workshop last year:Workshop on saturday: Tidied workshop:hmm stereo!Tasty goodies to note:Rear big bumper £5!Strut bracesAll the little bits and bobs are on the shelves and on various boxes. new subframe, wishbones, crossmember have only just arrived so not pictured, new brake set up is in the back of my car. Will be updating frequently from this weekend onwards as project gets underway. Will hopefully be going home tomoorow night, car parked up and stripped be end of thurday.Once stripped assess what needs doing rust wise. While filler is drying, start on sound deadening and vice versa. Aim to have car sound deadened and painted by wednesday/thurday. obviously weather could play a big part in this. Then its time to fit central locking kit, and make new boot build. Refit interior/fit new interior.fit new front subframe ect.depending on time, paint and fit or just refit exterior trim.New wheels may be a wek or two late, as im tempted to refurb them while tyres are off as one has some big scratches. nmt_oli
Ok, Car is now all stripped inside. Everything out minus dash and wheel!Ive had to chuck a fair bit of factory sound deadeneing from the footwells, was so wet it was starting to rot. Leak turned our to be a blocked drain hole in scuttle, with a load of crap built up behind it. Water built up and dripped through bonnet release cable grommit, down onto back of fusebox !!!!! , and into footwell!Old greynessSaturated sound deadeningHad to be careful, alsmost tempted to make the car a stripped out mean machine! But no, that look will be saved for the mini. This needs to be a nice daily driver.Typical britain, Rain stopped play for a little while, so had to fiddle in the wokshop. put another coat of paint on boot plinth, and sprayed my rear cards. Look much better, but could prob do with another coat. When it dryed up a bit, i set to work with the first of the sound deadening, the stick on stuff. Roller in hand off we went!In the crevicesBy the time i finished i had 2 layers in the wheel well, 1 on the boot floor, 1 on the arches, 2 on the inside of quater panels, and 1 on the inside of the rear panel. Also got the expanding foam out to fill cavities in the new tailgate, and filled the gap between the two skins behind the rear windows in the quater panels. Im not letting any of my base escape! The knock test shows a noticeable difference in the panels already, cant wait to get 2 layers in the boot with spectrum paint on top! Ive used half my stick-on stuff, and need to do the front doors 2 layers, and the floor one layer. hopefully will have enough!Need to get the car drivable again in the morning, going for a park session with some mates from back home, and picking up my front big-bumper from bournemouth. Chuck 2 seats in (pickign someone up) bolt on window winders and away we go lol! should be fun. Edited March 30, 2007 by nmt_oli
