haydon_peter
First pro 2 in a 24?Don't you have a BMX spaced hub Fred?! I was thinking that, it doesnt count until you have the wheel fitted in a frame that will take the hub

Prawny Baby
personally, other than ridding itself of excess grease, which porter clearly did straight off, i dont really see that there is any bedding in period for a ratchet and pawl hub.......i think they just skip...... simple as that. having seen the inside of a profile, and what happened to a mates profile ona stock bike after just two weeks, i dont think id ever trust the internals on a Pro2..... sure, they may well have much deeper teeth, but its pretty clear to me that its not the wonder hub it was always made out to be....ash- noticed your not responding lately..... i hope your hungry mate.... and i hope you have decent dental insurance, because your going to need it after eating a hub....i know i certainly wont be moving away from a king any time soon.... 011001000110010101110010
Why do they need to bed in? Nothing in side the hub will be changing shape of compostion. Or is the springs?
AdamR28
The springs work more effectively when theyre pushing against a lovely smooth surface. This only happens once they've polished the back of the pawl (which needs quite a few cycles).
011001000110010101110010
Aha, I understand now. So taking some of the grease out increses the wear basically so speeding up the process, correct?
AdamR28
Pretty much. A lighter lube would probably do a better job of polishing up the pawl/spring interface too, but don't hold me to that (I'm no expert). It just sort of makes sense in my head too that, if the lube is lighter, it doesn'y 'gum' up the hub like can happen with a King.
Urpedigreechumdog
Mine has been fine so far, as soon as i got it, i took it apart, cleaned most of the grease off and put some thin xc lube in. Hasn't skipped once so far and has a very loud click Edited March 6, 2006 by Urpedigreechumdog

Anyhow, ive taken the grease out of mine a put some chain lube in there. I am yet to put the wheel in a bike however...
Waynio
il speak to you wednesday porter.............. all i have done with "ratchet ring" hubs before is build the wheel, put it in a bike, and stand on the pedals, JUST to tighten the ratchet ring in BEFORE going out and riding it hard, apart from that there is not alot more you can do.Porter did your seal go back in ok?????? sometimes its a little harder to get the seals to sit "spot-on" some times you have to use the PROPER hope seal press tool (just like their bearing installation tools) etc etc. if you dont (not 100% BUT) it could affect it. cos it has to be pushed back if something breaks off the seal and into the ratchet then it may cause a bit of disturbance.iv had mine a good 3months of RIDING, had it maybe 4/5months in total been injured twice, and out for a good month with hand and 3/4 weeks with ankle. so in theory my hubs had a good 3months of use even though iv ad it alot longer not YET come across mine slipping, altho someone got on it last night and i heard a clunk. not 100% if it was a slip didnt seem to "disrupt" the pedal movement. was just a noise more than owt. BUT i think if your used to a king then going back to a pawl and spring hub (i can say this iv done it 3/4 times) when i had kings and went back to hopes. but if you just go swinging weight at it, IF your at the stage of the pick-up where it is between picking up it can possibly slip, the old 3 pawl&spring design is easiest to use as an example as the 3 literally pickup within ........... blah blah blah of a mm of each other, therefore if its JUST about to engage but not, it slips the one it should pick up into JUST to the next set of teeth. but it doesnt slip so that it causes NO drive. a king when it slips causes no drive or can do as i found out with a couple of mine. but obviosly your feet/angle of cranks do change. this is what can put people off i think. the new one cos its got more pick up it has a "less" chance of slipping a bigger gap kind of thing.im sure the deciding factor will be probably in july/august when the people that have got them early doors and like me and ash have had them for a more considerable length of time we can actually give FULL details on if/what/why/when there is a problem. i think il change my pawls and springs after a few months and keep poppoing inside mine every 3 or 4 weeks to see what the insides are looking like.Waynio............................
