Boiling / Baking?

JT!

Recommended Posts

Tried the microwave but now there's a 6ft hole in the corner of my house. :ermm:

Disinfecting my pads and rotor today and want to know what the best method is. Don't have a dishwasher at my disposal. So it's either boiling or baking. Or both if needs be.

Is it safe to heat pads to high temperatures? I’ve heard stories of glue melting etc.

I'm only going to do this once and weather I keep my avid or not depends on it working, so I’ll try anything bar setting fire to them.

Cheers. :)(Y)

can you take a picture of this hole please... Im intrigued, almost tempted to go to your house to see it :P

Anyway, when mine were contaminated I boiled a pan of water, and dropped the disc + pads into it for about 5 minutes (uncovered :P ) took them out with a fork put on and the beast was back (Y)

All Ill suggest is make sure you pan is much larger than the disc. Mine was a tight squeeze when it was cold and of course when it got hot it expanded :ermm:

Also the pads might start "cracking". Don't worry they're fine and they wont mark the pan surface incase your parents get suspicious :P

Ok cheers, i'll give that a try.

Just wish i had a trox key.

blowtorch is such an easy way to do this. place the flame for like a minute per pad until you can't smell things burning off anymore. i've done my same set of pads like 4 times, no problems ever with the heat causing things to crack. once they're cool enough to handle, wipe them down with a wet paper towel to remove some of the char and you're good to go. you can do the whole thing in 15 minutes.

you would be standing there for ages :P

blowtorches are cheap enough, well mini ones anyway, bout 7-10quid for 1 with a gas cartridge, go to a plumbing shop (Y)

Nah i'm too lazy for that. And too tight.

I'll find another sorse of fire. :D

Do you really need to burn it ?

I just wiped my rotor down with white spirit on a clean rag after a fat person touched it with their greasy burger covered fingers & it got all rubbish.

It made excellent honk noises for about 5 minutes and returned to its normal state of working ok but sounding a bit like a rake dragging across a concrete path.

What i don't really want to do is whipe it down, find it isn't any better, then boil them and find that it dosn't work any better.

I'm just gonna go the full haul and do it once proporly.

Well my boiling technique DEFINITLY worked. I didn't even need to bed it in again afterwards. But I can't say it will work for you cos...it may not lol

EDIT: Sorry can you still post a picture of this hole in the kitchen :P:rolleyes:

Because of the way disc brakes work you will have bedded it in again afterwards, only maybe not in the same way.

I used a cooker hob to burn mine but if you can get hold of a clipper lighter or one of those trigger lighters for old people to use on fires then that should work as well.

I just tried to un-contaminate my disk, I rubbed the rotor with white spirits then got a course cloth and rubbed it hard with white spirit then tried to burn my rotor with a lighter, and inevitably half way through got bored.

Then I held my pads on my hob for about a minute and a half each and it stank!, then the second one had white flames after all the other flames so i stopped and put them under cold water, then dryed them with a tea towel.

Then washed down the caliper in hot soapy water aswell as the rotor. Now i'm just waiting for it to all dry and then bed it in (which probably won't work).

Expect feedback within the hour ;) .

EDIT: 100% worse. Even if i do 3 finger breaking it still doesn't hold me and It's still covered in oil. To tell the truth I can't wait untill I get a magura again.

maybe you should try some sort of wavey rotor? worked for me.and keep to the standard pads they are immense! all i do is sand the top layer of the pad off, dont even bother with the rotor put it all back on set it up and chuck anywater i can get hold of over it then ride as fast as possible and slam the brake on after a few times of braking the water shoud have dryed off and it should work a beast (Y)

Well, i've flamed my pads and boilded my rotor.

Put it all back on and i'll have to wait till the snows clears to bed it all back in again, we'll see how it goes.

If not I think a change is in order.
