Ollie Histon
well, ive just felt my shins after numerous hits to them from pedals without shin pads and rather than bin flat, theyre like a fricking mountain range. And by the time im 50 i probably wont be able to walk :$ anybod else worried about how trials can effect the body, my friend had to give up due to back problems, just look at adam wahats his name who used to be a trialskings. Danny
If you hit your shins a lot i suggest you invest in some shin pads. Generally you learn not to hit them too often eventually.Other areas that a lot of riders have problems include wrists, ankles, lowerback, ankles probably being the most common. Walleee
I tend to get more muscular pain than anything and havnt had any pedal/shin interfaces in quite some time now, I started to get cramps last night once I came in which I think is down to the fact that it was absoutley baltic yesterday and i was out for ages, warming up, cooling down, getting to another spot, warming up, cooling down, etc.
stiffnips
I usually get back and wrist problems.
Impacted.
Like fook. I play badminton like a pussy now because my right wrist is knackered, my shins are scarred for life, and the ligaments in my right ankle aren't gonna stand up to another sprain ... Jez
I too have himalaya shins. I've had more grief than most recently though because I had a massive break from riding (5 years) and thens started again. I think just about every muscle in my body was in agony for a few weeks, but now it's all settled down a bit. The only thing that gets me occasionally is my left thigh because it's always tensed up (I ride left foot forward). I think my Himalaya shins were more as a result of years back when I used to ride a lot of dirt as well; pretty sure that did more damage to my shins than trials ever did. I've whacked my shins maybe once or twice since I started trials again. No current scars. Maybe I'm not riding hard enough Oh and the other thing I regularly get is my left brake lever taking a bit of skin off my left middle finger when I'm upping to stuff. I don't know why, it doesn't happen to my right hand and I'm pretty sure it never used to happen in my first period of riding trials...gloves have helped but it's still a pain in the arse.I think the biggest problem I've got is more doing my feet damage from looping out when I don't make a big up and landing hard on them (you know when you're feet sort of 'buzz' for a bit, then it goes away). I can see all that damage adding up at some point. Either way I've got a check up at the doctor's this week so we'll see what they say...I reckon I do more damage to myself at work though. Getting hit by flying flightcases...catching 100Kg speakers when somebody drops their half of it...regularly doing heavy lifting...tripping over cables...the list goeth on. Luke Drewery
Am, I the only one here whos knees feel knackered, like when I crouch down I can hear them crack. I dont suffer any pain from trials except after long rides my knees ache a little as does my lower back.
mat hudson
inside of my fingers are the worst, the really cane, i think its to do with my grips being hard + thin.
granty
i dont get much injuries from biking i just get muscle pain but i have scoliosis (bent spine) not from riding trials though but apparently if i have an operation after i have recovered the spine man said i could still ride but it depnds
Janson
my fingers are extremely crooked.. and i can bend them in ways that amaze people, haha.also, my lower back hurts ever so often. right shin looks a bit battered, haven't had that many bad crashes (touches wooden guitar).sprained the foot once though.. that was a bad one. i can see f**ked ankles being the worst and most occuring damage.. Dan6061
Am, I the only one here whos knees feel knackered, like when I crouch down I can hear them crack. Mine do that, I've never worried about it though. Just recently, my wrists have been aching loads, but not whilst i'm riding.
Simon
Just had a shower, and noticed my stomach muscles hurt to the touch, as do my triceps and my breasts ( ).And that was hardly f**k all riding.
Ash-Kennard
my knees, back and recently thigh cramps. my shins for some reason have developed muscle on top of them, every one at school has flat shins, i have a muscle? weird
ogre
Am, I the only one here whos knees feel knackered, like when I crouch down I can hear them crack. I get that, and when i crouch etc i can hear little noises etc (my friend who does a lot of running gets the same thing, I've asked about it, and was told that it's the cartillage), mainly muscle pains though, but they all stoped after the 1st month or so of riding. I don't think trials is that bad for breaking people though, other sports are much worse, you ever seen some of the bails in downhill? But there are good points to what it does to your body... I'm gonna try and get through a summer of riding, then speak to the doctors and see what they can do for me. Someone on here had a similar thing and said it was water under the kneecap and it was easily sorted, but I dunno...Oh and Si - that's 'cos you're a fag
dean
Yea I thought I was the only one worried about what physical effect trials is having on my body but it seems like I'm not alone which makes me even more worried. I used to hit my shins quite often when I first started but as Danny said you just learn to stay on the pedals and as a result I haven't hit them in a while. Still wear shins pads though because it fooking hurts when you do get a pedal in your leg!Just recently I've been riding more often and have started getting wrist and lower back pains which is concerning. Mainly the back pains as I dont know whats causing them. Also find when I go out and ride after a 2 week or so break I get cramps in my lower leg behind the shin. Some times after a ride I wake up in the middle of the night and the pain is excruisiating Think thats probably becuase I never do any exercises to warm up.I wonder how trials effects your chances of getting arthritis (sp) Oh well time will tell
PaRtZ
Ive always had bad knees ever since I was 13 lolMostly its my ankles after big drops, and thats all really. I used to get bad wrists bad they've sorted emselves out now I just suggest a good rest after each ride. And thats what my doctor said when I had a hairline fracture in my foot (no joke, he said just rest it)
flipkickbs
Before trials, i was a filthy skateboarder, so trials in comparison (injury wise) is a walk in the park. But what i find is that it just makes me really tired after riding 3 or 4 days in a row. I'm not really that worried about long-term damage to myself, because when i'm 50 or so, car insurance for me will be cheap, and then i'll cruise round the streets like an original gangster. Ollie Histon
Christ! is seems like every single person on this forum has an injury of some sort due to trials riding! and the worst part is, because trials has only been around for a rough decade, we don't have anybody who has retired from trials after a long youth of doing it. so we don't know how it may effect us by the time we're
mtbjosh
im 15 and on everystep of going upstairs in the morning and late at night, both of my ankles are like bloody firescrackers on every step , and my shoulders are as smooth as an angle grinder, rave one! toodles
Jaffacakes
Just had a shower, and noticed my stomach muscles hurt to the touch, as do my triceps and my breasts My breasts have been absolutely wrecking the past few days, when ever I move they go into painful spasms. I have gone through a pack and a half of pain killers over the weekend so i can ride. The buzz from my last hit is dieing off so i better keep up the dosage .My neck has been quite bad for a few years now I have go crack it occasionally to stop it from being stiff. Hopefully I don't get arthritis in later life.
Will Arnold
its worth it lads, better doing trials than doing your 'average joe' types of sports (even though they can be good )
Alun Goch
Problems I've had are knees and fingers, really creaky and painfull, but found that just drinking more water solves that. Had a few shinnies, typically on the only days I decided not to bother with pads! Sods Law sucks... but hey, no pain no gainAlunEDIT: Oh yeah, for those of you that have a lovely hot shower after a hard ride DONT! Have a freezing cold one instead! It's much better for you, something about stopping the blood in the muscles, prevents getting knots in them, something along those lines anyway... In fact extreme sports in general haven't really been around long enough for the long term effects to examined. Mark W
Trials has been around since the 80's, so there IS a bit more time to see what happens. Ashton's 32 (I think) and still riding, and he's been riding well over 10 years now?
