F-Stop Junkie
Leave it in auto, or put in the camera into an 'indoor' setting if there is one. It'll do everything Rob P suggested for you, without you having to worry.

Brisa
Mr F-stop... I really think your over estimate the fuji s5600... Its not on par with the settings your canon probably has.Did you look at the pic of the tower I took with auto, it was pish. Just like every other photo it takes in auto. Rob_P
Thats actually quite a good point.Even though the fuji is a fantastic camera, and in some situations auto can be fine, for snapshots etc but for anything else it's crap.Maybe use shutter or apature pirority but auto for trials is poo.Just use friggin Manual, it's not even hard to use so whats all the fuss about, change a few settings here and there and its piss. It's like trying to teach a monkey, only he'd probably have more luck. Hobnobs
Persoanlly, i think you should stick to shutter or aperture priority with any camera. Manual doesnt really have much use as you can control anything you want with the above modes

Tony Harrison
Yeah, but as Rob said, you should play about with aperature and shutter speed priority ('A' and 'S' on the dial I think).
Tomm
Did you look at the pic of the tower I took with auto, it was pish. I'm pretty sure that one was rubbish because you pointed the camera half into the sun and got a crap angle
spunkey_monkey_boy
It's like trying to teach a monkey, only he'd probably have more luck. your trying to teach dave, thats faaar harder than teaching a monkey...(sorry, couldn't resist)
Brisa
I'm pretty sure that one was rubbish because you pointed the camera half into the sun and got a crap angle Ive a selection of pictures here taken at the same angle in various modes... Auto is by far the worst.
F-Stop Junkie
Mr F-stop... I really think your over estimate the fuji s5600... Its not on par with the settings your canon probably has. What the camera is doesn't matter. My Sony compact is probably very similar to the Fuji but I've got some great pictures out of it. Ditto old Fuji and Nikon compacts.Learn how your camera works. How it meters, what happens in different flash modes, what happens if you half press the shutter button (AF Lock? AE lock?) Relying on manual mode means taking 10 attempts at one shot instead of one or two. If you don't have a live histogram on the screen, you will have problems taking shots in bright sun, otherwise how do you know if what you see on the screen will match what appears on your monitor? If the pictures you take in manual mode are so good, then the camera is capable of them. How can you make the camera do that itself? A half press somewhere? A change of picture mode? Play around, read the manual, find out. Don't struggle on making life hard for yourself! Find out what works for you too, don't just use the same settings as everyone else, as different people have different styles and patience.Oh Dave, that was my line on MSN for a while... Brisa
Lol, Im sorry. Just a bit of a beginner, just so far all my best photo's have been with manual mode.Suppose I should listen to the veterans. Will experiment with the auto/predefined modes soon and report my findings in my thread.Sorry for stealing your dave!
