butcha87
Heya guys,Tommorow I have the daunting task of taking my sisters acoustic guitar over to London to give to her. I live in Jersey so will be taking a plane to Gatwick adn then going to Vauxhall bridge, where my friends flat is located.Has nayone had experiences of taking guitars on planes, trains buses etc. good or bad?Can you give me any tips? Can I take the guitar with me as hand luggage onto the plane, and stow it in the overhead storage?Or wil it definately be stowed away in the luggage hold?I do not have a hard case for the guitar, only a soft one. What about on the tube etc?Is it going to be safe?Sorry if I'm a bit ignorant, I've bin to London like 4 times, and never with a guitar! Also it is not mine,so I don't want to get it damaged! Sameer
Why is she making you give it to her, as opposed to her coming down herself and getting it? Seems kinda harsh because in the event it does get damaged somehow, you're held liable instead of her. Or you could just post it?But anyway... I'm 78% sure the guitar'll be taken as proper luggage because it's too big to be lugging around in the plane/fondling with overhead compartments, etc. As for tubes and buses, as long as it isn't busy (it's London - it will be...) you should be alright, provided you don't have a run in with some chavs or something. tomturd
Im pretty certain you wont be able to take it on as hand luggage, it wouldnt fit in the little box thing they use to make sure its small enough. There should be an 'awkward luggage' bit though which they put stuff like bikes, surf boards, ski's etc in though..Just bubble wrap it before you put it in the soft case should be fine. Houseface
i asked my mum(she works ffor british airways) and she said that you can do but your not allowed any thing else on with you(only the things in your pockets), so it should be okay steve. benno
Always dodgy carrying a guitar around anywhere crowded in a soft case. You'll just have to be careful I guess. My friends from Ireland flew over with their guitars in the overhead luggage, but theirs were electric (i.e. smaller). I wouldn't trust baggage handlers with it in a soft case for anything!
Fishy
They wouldn't let me take my guitar as hand luggage to America with me, and that was acoustic. But it was in a hard case, but not like those ones the size of a chello's, if you get me, the nice and small 1's.
benno
Hmm, seems like acoustic guitars are kind of borderline size then. If it's a little acoustic, you may get away with it. If it's a big dreadnaught thing I guess you won't, and I really wouldn't trust it baggage handlers in a soft case!
