Car Problems

Recommended Posts

Just had a new osf tyre put on the other day, and they noticed that the 'cv boot' had gone (apparently the seal or something?). Well prior to knowing this, when i turn right hand corners anything over about 20mph the car makes this horrible creaking sound like the chasis' gonna explode or something, well not quite but still. Are these 2 things related, and anyone know how much it will cost to get the 'cv boot' replaced??

cheers

It is quite possible they are realted.

The CV boot is a protective cover covering the CVD (constant velocity driveshaft) keeping dust out, and grease in. if its been plit for a while, then its likly that the CV has dried up, and is causeing that knocking. It may have worn it quite badly, in which case you will need a replacement CV drive as well as the boot. Replceing the boot is a pretty involved task anyway, unless you go for a wrap around and glue jobby, which isnt as good as a full one.

unless mechanically competent, take it to a trusted garage (Y)

that reminds me, i think i need to do a CV boot on the pug as well as the steering rack and brakes :S bummer.

does it sound anything like a popping? or perhaps a kettle boilling over? its hard to descride, i thought it souded like a plastic fan blade catching....

you need to let us know what car it is mate! as certain cars are famour for particular faults! although from what you have said, id say the CV has gone, perhaps from too much dirt ingress sinse the boot went.....

Thanks for advise so far, its a Pug 106 (diesel if that makes a difference)

Forgot to mention in previous post, ive noticed now when i come to slow down at lights etc and roll at a slow pace, the car makes an annoying ticking sound, like a deep clicking noise. Can only imagine these 2 creakings im getting are related again?

And i wouldnt have a clue how to fix this myself, so a garage is the only option

Thanks again

Sound could be like a popping noise i guess, yeah.

as a guideline a CV joint for a mini is £38, and a CV boot is around a fiver..... i dont know how different pug prifes are likely to be, but that gives you an idea at least....

doing the CV boots is a HORRIBLE job, as you have to take the hubs off to get the shafts out, then bang the cv off the end of the shaft to get the new boots over....

ive just done inners and outters on my mini last week, did it while changing the brakes.

106's arnt TOO fiddly, so im guessing its around 2-3 hours labour for a capable garage.

Sounds about right to be honest

Try getting the parts from somewhere like German Swedish & French (gsfcarparts.com) and getting your local dad/mechanic/back street garage to do it. French cars (in my experience) are a b*****d to work on and dealership parts prices (which is what a normal garage will charge you for even if they are not) are a joke.

Also, if you know what parts you need specifically, then use 247spares.co.uk. Enter the part you want on a request form, put your mobile number in and submit it. Breakers then call you with the part you need and give you a price including delivery. I've used this for golf parts and it works really well and doesn't take a lot of effort.

Im about to have the pleasure of this to try and get my dads pug working!

Since i have to replce the brakes, i may as well do the leaky cv boot thats on there. The only concern i have, is that its not the origonal engine, so it may not be the origonal shafts / cvs, so finding the right ones could be fun!.

I have watched about 5 CV boot been changed, and also i have changed a couple, takes 1 and a half hours max. So where you go 3 hours from i do not know.

shut up. your just a kid, what could you POSSIBLY know?

there is no max time for a job to take at all, you have to allow for possible problems, i was also taking into account that a car has TWO sides...... personally, id get them both done at the same time, its common sense IMO.

and how many garages are going to charge you as little as possible?

shut up and stop trying to make out you know it all. come back when your old enough for a driving licence.

i was TRYING to give a ROUGH idea.... edging on the side of caution

Nicks right, every car is different! even the same model of the same age will have small differences when it comes to work like this, just because of the way its been used! If the cars been driven by an old granny to go shopping, its liekly to have seen a lot less miles, so less wear on parts, and less dirt on stuff underneath, so its going to be much easier to do a job like this than on a car that does high motorway milage in the winter (all that salt and road grime is soo horrible to cars!).

In the case of a mini, nick is speaking from experience as he has done the job himself, and don't say hes not competent becuase hes not a mechanic- i expect he could do it faster and better than a lot of general (ie non mini specialist) mechanics, as he knows so much about the car!

I would say 3 hours is a good estimate, considering that in general you have to remove the wheel, the brake assembly, the wheel hub, and then the drive shaft, replace the boot and then reasemble. giving that bolts are likely to be rusty/siezed, it can wildly vary in time!

i never said i knew everything at all.... i gave an idea on a ROUGH time for the job, and an account of how it went on the mini.....

i dont know everything, but id be willing to put my entire life savings on knowing a GREAT DEAL more than you, your a 15yr old kid, who clearly spends far too much time on his computer.

i have been servicing and maintaining my family and friends cars for the past 6-7 years, on cars rangin from bmw's and audis, through to citroens, fiestas, escorts, both diesel and petrol, and a few engine swaps on transit vans. everything with the exception of ECU related things is done by me on my familys cars, ive build my own car ENTIRELY myself.

ive owned around 20 cars myself sinse the age of ten, all of which worked on by me, ive done over 3 years of racing on both grass and tarmac tracks, in several different cars (not just minis at all) and have a trophy cabinet with over 30 trophies (3 years of racing, 10-12 meets a year, you work that out)

oh yea, and ive got a driving licence! so while i dont claim to know everything (infact, outside of minis i know very little) i know a SHIT LOAD more than you-kid.

if theres one thing i DO know its that no matter how long a job SHOULD take, it will almost always take a lot longer.....

as i said earlier.... come back when you can drive.

answer me this though.....

is your birthday 14 June 1991?

14 june....1991??? wtf, where'd u get that idea from??? I say again.... Stop thinking you know everything. Oh and i was half hour out lets say, check a few pages, if you havent done one before, 3 hours, if so one hour each side. But i have a licenced mechanic a few doors down, he doesnt have a lot of things used in a garage, and he gets it dont in half the time for less money.
