Golf Mk2

Hey people.

In around 1 year, my sister will be getting a new car, currently she has a Golf MK2 in good condition.

When she gets a new car, i will be geting the golf for free for a few months intill im old enough to drive it.

The thing is, in the time that its just sitting around doing nothing, i want to be doing some mods to it, like, alloys, lowered, tints, sound system ect...

I was wondering, do you have to get a garage to put lowered suspension (SP? :ermm: ) on? or would i be able to do it manually with my dad (he knows lots about cars cause hes a ex mexhanic, but he hasnt had anything to do with MK2's...)

How much would... (considering all the parts are good makes and all...)

A sound system containing 1 12" sub, 2 AMP's, 2 6X9's 2 alpine 10" door speakers

Alloys (prefeble 17")

Lowering springs

Window tints

MAYBE some bucket seats...

Induction kit

Bore exhaust

Just so i will be able to aim for a price so i will be able to afford it...

(my dads insuring it, tax, MOT, lessons, test ect, so i just need the money for the mods...)

Thanks, rob!

(P.S, i dont even know why im making this post lol, im just happy that iv got a car lined up for me)

Firstly get an exhaust thats going to suit the performance of your car, other wise it will be absoutly pointless putting the induction on there. Big exhausts lose alot of backpreasure.

Find out what will increase performance and work well with induction, don't worry it will make more noise.

Rob,here's a good site for all the information your after www.edition38.com this site caters for all things VW modified.Try to have some sort of budget in mind,i was modding Golfs MK1's-4's and the rule of thumb is think of how much you want to spend on mods and double it,because by the time you've finished you would have spent a mint.

Your price list could look like this

A sound system containing 1 12" sub, 2 AMP's, 2 6X9's 2 alpine 10" door speakers(this really depends on what brands you go for,if your getting good stuff anything from a couple of hundred to a grand at least!)

Alloys (prefeble 17") There are some good wheel and tyre packages out, best deals are on line, look to spend at least five hundred pounds here unless you go for second hand which will be a little less!

Lowering springs (you will need to make sure that your shocks are good before you slap on a set of lowering springs, expect to pay around 30-40 pounds a corner for springs or if you want the best, then go for a set of Koni adjustable suspension for about 700-1000 pounds, depending on where you get it from.Again, the best deals are on line!)

Window tints ( about 300-350 pounds for a MK2,remember,no limo tint on the passenger front and drivers windows as the Five O don't like it and they can make you either scrape it off there and then or make you leave the car where it is!!)

MAYBE some bucket seats... (this is up to you,but the aftermarket trend on the VW scene is to go for Recaros from a G60 ,these can be trimmed in leather and some are electric, very nice and a full interior in leather shouldn't cost you any more than 5-6 hundred pounds!

Induction kit Check what engine your Mk2 has first as some work better with the origoial airbox! having said that these kits can be anything up to 100pounds

Bore exhaust Look for a good make here, like sebring,Miltek, jetex and supersprint to name a few, whatever you do don't just change the back box,if your gonna do it then do it properly and change the whole system, again look to spend a couple of hundred here as well!

I hope this has helped you, check out that web site and shop around!!

Mike.

Please dont do stupid mods on it like tinted windows, big exhaust, stupid 17" wheels it will look shit. Have a look at edition38 for ideas, I know youve probaly read max power all your life but please dont ruin it :(

I have a picture in my mind of what its going to look like.

Im going to get it sprayed black, rear windows limo tinted, 17" black chrome alloys, lowered, induction kit, and probably a big bore, but thats probably all i will do to it :)

Cough*!"SPOILTBRAT"!*cOUGH

I wish.

Mark 2's are awsome, you beeep beep beep beep :P

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

desire68, thanks for all that info, its doing me well :)

Now all i have to do when i get home is do a little shopping cart of what im getting

BTW, its only a 1.3 8V, but meh, it will do as my first car :P

Im pretty sure i will be able to sell it on :P

What the hell do you connect a rev counter up to? cause MK2's dont have rev counters

Seriously boss, don't do the LA gangsta look - save that for the Nova boys

Modding a VW is all about the less is more approach. Have a look on Cleaned.be for inspiration and then do something different from all the Mcdonalds crowd

Best bet is to go for the OEM+ look - whereby you use parts from other vw/audi models and maybe just improve whats there rather than go silly with fibreglass and the like. Don't do window tints, or if you do, go for a light smoke one rather than a ghetto limo tint. Otherwise it just looks shit when you have to leave the front screen clear. Wheels - get some Ronal turbos if you're rich, or try some other model wheels. Audi rims don't suit the Mk2 in my opinion, get some old school BBS's or Brocks. Porsche rims work well and can be quite cheap as well. Oh, and if you fill it with speakers it'll weigh a ton and ruin whatever performance you had before. Mk2's are all about handling - no bigger than 15 inch rims and a 30mm drop.

I've had every series of Golf, I've still got a Mk2 valver track car and sold my Mk3 colour concept at the weekend for an Audi 1.8t just in case you wonder if I know what I'm on about. ClubGTI is also well worth having a look at.

Or go for the rat look B)

17's are far too big for a mk2. Biggest i'd go personally is 16's or even better, 15's for handling. You can pick up a set of bbs ra's which came on the gti's and suit the cars better than any ripspeed shit for about 150quid with tyres. Lowering wise i'd get a set of gas springs and shocks which will come to about 200quid. You will be able to fit these yourself with no problems if, as you say, your dads a mechanic.

Depending on the engine you can either do a lot for performance or not much at all...You'd have to say what engine it is. Either way I wouldn't bother modding the engine. Just spend 100quid on lots of serviceable parts and get it running sweet. If it's a carburettor engine then you could always upgrade to weber's and get them tuned. This will be the most efficiant way of getting more power and better economy.

If you do window tints i'd officially not speak to you again. They always look shit unless they're done properly which costs about 200quid. Pointless waste of money. Again with bucket seats, if you've not got a gti they will look totally out of place and you'll get caned at the lights by saxo vts' and nova 2.0 16v's. They'll all assume you've got a 1.8 16v too and flame you a good un'.

Stereo wise. Don't go for 6x9's. Everyone makes the mistake of getting 6x9's, butchering their parcel shelf, and putting a sub in the boot. It draws too much bass in to the back of the car and generally sounds completely bollocks. If you want a good sounding stereo you will need:

A good headunit (Alpine or similar >£150)

Decent component's for the front doors (Like Focal's about £130)

A good 12inch sub in a matched box (Alpine are generally good will cost about £120 for basic setup)

A decent amp which is the right power for the sub. (£100?)

Styling wise I'd reccomend not changing anything. A clean well polished golf lowered on ra's is classy and won't attract the police too much. A ripspeeded up golf will be a pig magnet...

Providing you follow the above you'll end up with this:

If you don't, you'll end up with a car like this beauty...

Right, lots of good advise has been listed here! listen to it!

don't go all out chav, its expensive, and you wont have the performance to match the looks which is embarassing.

If its going to be your first year driving, i seriously doubt you would even be able to get insurance with all those mods listed, or if you can it would be VERY expensive, ie £2500+ for the year TPFT, will you dad realistically be willing to pay that?

i reckon go for a real sleeper, lower it, use 15inch steel wheels that are nice and wide, painted black, no tints, no race style buckets (but maybe more supportive seats from another car).

This will keep insurance down, while still making it more nimble. I don;t know about VW engine mods, so ill let you get advise from others here.

Audio wise, you do not need 2x 12" subs, and remember thay are heavy! the best way of you to improve performance in your car is to reduce wieght.

i have 2x12" subs powered properly in my dads 1982 chevy van (think the a-team) and it is PLENTY of base in that, when drving, if you look at a road sign, you can't read it as the letters blur with the bass! i have yet to be in the vehicle at full volume- it hurt too much before i got there!

I would go with a decent head unit, the best you can afford, spend the money here and it will pay off- upgrade speakers later. Once a decent head unit is sorted, get your self some nice 6.5" comps and make sure there installed in proper enclosures you get the midbass out of the drivers. for the deeper sounds, a 10" sub will be nice and punchy while still giving good bass. Go for a 12" if you really want loud and rattly. I think that a 10" fibreglassed into the side of the boot, so you can still use the boot, is a great way of doing it in the golf. Amp the speakers and sub up, set it up properly and it will sound great, look stealth, and really surprise your mates!

You're not going to like this, but personally i wouldn't even bother. To mod a car you need a decent platform first, either some beasty thing or a classic like a mini or mk2 escort. A 1.3 golf is going to be dog slow and with the mods you want to do will probably die even quicker, 17's especially are going to knacker the wheel bearings and driveshafts not to mention make it handle like a truck. As the others have said subtlety is the key
