Cutting Pictures?

I think i may have worked it out, you will see some pictures like this:

These pictures if you notice have no shadows going on from any angles, this makes me think that these photos have been cut out probably using the good old "magic wand" tool on photoshop or similar.

Whereas if you notice the above picture has shadows on it, which tells me that these photos have been taken with the parts on some form of white background maybe even white paper like JoeMaher said.

So 2 answers for you, either take the pictures on a white background or find a lovely white room. Number 2, take normal pictures then learn to use a photo editing program, i suggest adobe photoshop. To cut the pictures out and put them on a white background, you can also choose any other colour you please, or even a pattern/image.
