Jaffacakes
Some tart covered my disk rotor in 3 in 1 lubricant oil and I just can't sort it out.I have tried putting my rotor in the dish washer, going down a hill with it on then covering it in water, I have scrubbed my pads in hot soapy water which cleaned them up nicely but stays like that for about 10 seconds, scribing my rotor for about 20 mins and also attacking it with fire which didn't work. The worst part is that the pads and disk are both brand new . Is there anyway I could sort it out or will I have to replace them?

Fishy
Try cleaning it with petrol, then burning it off, i had this problem, but it was me that accidently sprayed it on, Try doing it a few times, then clean it with boiling water.Fish
Lawnmowerman
Petrol has oil in it. Get some thinners, it completely evaporates
Fishy
Worked fine for me, only if you burn it off though.
Jaffacakes
I will go and boil them both now just because it is easy . I only have prety harsh sand paper so would it mess up the rotor? and I haven't got any petrol...
Lawnmowerman
Harsh is good. Just make sure you get ALL the shit off
nmt_oli
No- harsh sand paper is bad for a disk rotor. if anyhting, use fine wet and dry.Putting your disk in the dishwasher should work, but if you didnt do naything about the pads as well, then it wont.Try the dishwasher again, and either replace pads or boil them, then sand the surface off and re-bed in the brake- it will be like new, so will take a while to get back to full power. Jaffacakes
None of its working . My harsh sand paper is completely black, the pads are still as oily and boiling didn't do anything. I think I will have to waste £45 now That's all hope of me getting a new front wheel just because someone thought it would be funny to cover my rotor in oil... Tw**s.re-bed in the brake- it will be like newIt's not even fully warn in yet, thats how new it is Edited February 8, 2006 by Jaffacakes
nmt_oli
Try just new pads, get the rotor, give it a proper scrub in strong degreaser/spirits and then wash it all off properly, to make sure theres no trace left- when spirits evaporate, they can still leave a residue containing the oil. It all need to be wiped off while still wet, and repeated. also try dishwashing again, coupled with just new pads should save you some money. Also make sure the inside of your calliper is clean, as you dont want to recontaminate parts when you reasemble! JT!
optional extra. boil your friend or flame him with a blowtorch.I'd take that option.
Jaffacakes
Is there anything that would destroy the oil on contact without destroying my rotor. Would turpentine or white spirits work? Edited February 8, 2006 by Jaffacakes
Ash-Kennard
surely methalated spirits would do the trick as it leaves no residue

br3n
Water wont remove oil....Best bet is to get some degreaser of some kind, Lee always uses (i think) carbon choke cleaner. meant for cars but does an awesome job.Try any kind of degreaser Ive not really bothered with mine but its never recovered from hobbsie smearing sausage fat on my disc at nass
PaRtZ
Dont see why not. When I cleaned mine, I just got a boiling pan of water and stuck the disc + pads in it for 5 minutes. Took em out and they were as good as before!!
ogre
If i were you I'd make your mate pay for the stuff before setting him on fire as for the disk (can't help you with the pads, they could be well and trully f**ked 'cause the pad material may have absorbed the the oil) but the disk! burn it on a gas cooker till it's black, clean off the black stuff, DO NOT PUT IT ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR PADS because the pads will cover it in oil again I heard some people put disks in a pan of water, and boil the water till the water has evaporated (and in theory the oil etc goes with the water) and keep doin it till the disk is dry... GuyJames
on a semi-related note: when putting your disc back together, make sure you do everything back up nice and tight because just now on my ride I pulled my Avid and the cable slipped through the holder thingy. I wasn't angry as I was riding nicely and it somehow magically made me Avid better after I tightened it up. Wo!
that NBR dude
I put my disk through our industrial glass washer / Steriliser at work which seems to have done the trick perfectly
Jaffacakes
I washed it in white spirits and it hasnt done a single thing
joshywa
this might sound stupid but sureley puting the rotor in an oven would remove some of the oils or use thinners, might work.... what size rotor was it ?
Street Lee
Petrol only contains oil if It's been mixed for a 2 stroke Petrol will get rid of all the shit off the rotor, keep wiping with clean (dip, wipe, swap cloth, dip, wipe, swap cloth etc) petrol and it will get rid of all the oil on there. Oil will not boil away, that's bollocks, you'll just get all the water boiling away and it will leave a nice shitty residue on your disk and on the bottom of your mum's finest cookware. When you boil a disk, why not put a squirt of fairy liquid (or equvalent ) in there to break down all the oil that comes off the disk? It cant float to the surface and cover the disk when you pull it back out then...
