anzo
Hi,I used studlock (locktite, whatever you want to call it) on my BB and now I need to get it off. I managed to unscrew the non-drive side easily, but the drive side is causing a problem.Locktite is only supposed to 'hold' the thread, not make it hard to unscrew once its started moving. So, after forcing it muchos with a BB tool and adjustable spanner it wasn't budging. So, plan B was to put the tool in a vice, and use the frame as the leverage...which helped a hell of a lot. Although it was still as stiff as hell to get it to move, it came out about 1/6 of the way, until 'slip' and yes, its completely raped the BB of its teeth, so its lodged in there and the tool is now useless on it. So, how the hell can I get this b*****d out withouth ruining my frame (don't care about the BB)? Why is it being such a b*****d?I'm quite worried now as its my second frame, the last one f**ked up on the BB threads ripping apart, and I don't want the same thing to happen to this one. Many Thanks! ogre
If you don't care about the bb then you could drill sideways through what is protruding (lame diagram below)(sticking out bit of)(your bottom)(bracket here)000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000<<<<<<Drill sideways into it, all the way through0000000000000000<<<<<<(try to drill part of it that doesn't spin round)0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000Frame type bit here!000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000Now you should have hole in whats sticking out of the bottom bracket, put a pipe or soemthing through it, and turn it with that, to unscrew whats left, i dont know a lot about bottom brackts so i don;'t know if the bb will take a pole going through it, if it doesn't then it could crack and you can take the bits of brokken bb out!It could work! anzo
It could work, although the problem is that its as stiff as hell and I need a lot of leverage for it to move. I think I might try welding the BB Tool to the BB case and use that. Although its a bit risky as the heat will damage my frame. Also the drill a hole method, theres not really enough of it sticking out to do that. Thanks! Simpson
What happeded with my bike was we got an angle grinder and cut grooves into the BB thing so the tool could grip it....... think the situation is very different from mine if it is the bb and not the lil shell thing that is stuck
Si-man
Boiling water will make the loctite go shitty. Pour some through the hole in your headtube so it gets to the bb area lol
anzo
It is an unsealed BB, two shells, axle and 2 bearings. I have removed the shell from the non drive side and got out the axle and one of the bearings. Now I just have the driveside shell and a bearing suck behind it. Ashley Smith
at this moment in time i would say your best option is to weld a bar to the b/b cup, don't worry the heat wont damage the frame, it wont get hot enough, just a couple of tacks on either side of the bar should do, then try and lever it out.another tip would be to try the boiling water triack, it may help loosen the threadlock offgood luckash
Danny
Try a pair of stilsonsI managed to stand and jump up and down on them without them slipping today
mat hudson
thats cos the more pressure you put on them the more they grip. i think.anyway, if i were you id put the bb bit in a vice and squeeeeeeeese it to death. then keep doing that untill it dies completley. try get the bearings out with a screwdriver and a hammer first. Just crush the BB shell? Wouldn't that ruin the threads?
Onza Kieron
In my opinion try that^^^, it may ruin the threads.....but you cant use your frame otherwise, £45 if the threads do get ruined, do you want to risk it?
anzo
In my opinion try that^^^, it may ruin the threads.....but you cant use your frame otherwise, £45 if the threads do get ruined, do you want to risk it?Not really no, I need my bike this week, and I can't afford to f**k it up now. I'll welding a pole to it, should work. There is no way that crushing the shell wouldn't damage the threads.
Danny
I wouldnt recommend simply crushing it as it could damage the threads.Have you tried winding it back in bit? Or is it stuck solid both directions?
anzo
I wouldnt recommend simply crushing it as it could damage the threads.Have you tried winding it back in bit? Or is it stuck solid both directions?Nah, the problem is that it seems VERY stiff. And now the teeth on the BB (where the BB tool inserts into) are all chewed up so I can't get a decent grip on it.Going to weld a bar to it, but I have a bad feeling that its just ripping the threads in my frame apart. Are they normally this hard to remove?
Danny
Going to weld a bar to it, but I have a bad feeling that its just ripping the threads in my frame apart. Are they normally this hard to remove?Nope once its loose it should come out by hand. But then again ive never threadlocked one in. Id try winding it in a bit before taking it out.another tip would be to try the boiling water triack, it may help loosen the threadlock offAlso have you tried this tip? Street Lee
It looks like it's coming out of the frame square so it's probably just gobbed up with shit. Try mole grips or stilsons and if neither work then go for the bar method. Also, work it 1/8th of a turn back for every time it gets stuck moving forward, helps to clear shit out of the threads. Mark W
Stupid question, but you ARE turning it the right way, yeah? Remembering it's an opposite thread? Anyhoo, if it's not X-threaded, you just need to try and destroy the bond of the glue, or apply more pressure. You can do the first bit by heat, e.g. boiling water or heating up the BB, and the second bit by using a longer bar
mat hudson
but he cant his bb remover teath are mashed. welding somthing to it sounds like an ok idea, just make sure its fecking long or you can fix a bar onto it in some way. rich4130
Try soaking it in thinners, may dissolve the loctite. Also, grind two flats on the bb, so you can put it in a vice etc. Put the whole shaabang in the freezer, then pour boiling water over the frame, not the bb, and undo it. anzo
Try soaking it in thinners, may dissolve the loctite.Put the whole shaabang in the freezerHow big is your freezer? lol.Cheers for the advice folks, I'll let you know how badly I f**k it up later, with photos. I am turning it the right way, drive side goes clockwise (turn towards headset) Grinding flats is a good idea, put it in the vice ect.
