Cassette Lockring - How Tight?

Recommended Posts

Got a king spacer kit and the last spacer hangs over the end of the driveshell, is this normal? I used them all as i have a king hub so figured its normal, but when i tightened the lockring quite a bit, it sort of crushed the spacers, and maybe them start to go over each other (if you get what i mean..). It wasnt really that tight...but how tight does the lockring have to be? doesnt seem like theres any 'resistance' on it to make it loosen?

I just do it finger-tight and it's fine. As soon as you get into tightening it with spanners etc, it becomes really hard to get off again, and there's no point anyway. As for the spacers, I guess you should perhaps take 1-2mm off the spacers so they fit properly with the Kog? It seems odd that King would supply it like that though. You definitely got them on the right way?

I Just give it a little bit of a push with a 500mm spanner........And my cassette hangs over the end a little...Aslong as the lockring will reach im sure it will be fine :)

f**k me thats a big spanner :P

Just do it hand tight with the tool, otherwise it will be a b*****d to get off.

Lock tite it on, had to do that with both my profiles now because the lockrings never stay tight (N)

Cheers laddies. I just dont want it to strip the thread or anything like that. The spacers are all in the right place etc etc. I'll do it finger tight and then a little nudge with a spanner... shouldnt come loose easily then? ill put some loctite on if i find some.

Hmm i think the spacers might be moving slightly as i sanded down the driveshell as it had notches all over it. i dont see why itd make that much difference though really... i tightened it finger tight with the tool and put loctite on it (Y) itll do!

Finger tight? That's slightly worrying! It' needs to be tight, but no so much that you're heaving on it with a giant spanner.

When I was working in a bike shop, I either had the tool in the vice and spun the wheel until it was tight, then gave the wheel a little tug, or a firm push on the spanner if I did it on the floor.

Although there's no load as such on the lockring, I'd still want it done up properly so it couldn't be shaken loose during it's life.

The only time mine has ever come undone was when I did it finger tight without the tool. Even then it was fine for a good while (weeks). And it doesn't really hold anything on there so it hardly matters if it comes slightly loose anyway - Most trials riders will have dug their cog so far onto their freehub anyway. Having said that, the only reason I do it up finger-tight is because otherwise it's a total bitch to get off. If you've got a chainwhip it's not too bad, so I guess you could go for it.
