David
Hey, just a quick question. I have an M6 thread tapped in one of my magura mounts, Id like to helicoil it to the standard M5 0.8 thread but I know you need to drill the hole with a 5.20mm drill bit. Would the M6 hole be too big for the helicoil to sit securely inside?Thanksdave
PaRtZ
I believe that if you want your current M6 thread to become an M5 thread, youd sort of need a double thick helicoil 'spring'Normally when you helicoil, you drill to a larger size, then helicoiling reduces it. If you try using the M5 helicoil drill bit, I thinking that it would be too small and not do anything Why you ask anyway?
Bionic Balls
well..now you've gone to the hassle of cutting an m6 thread, and probably modified your mounts/booster to fit, you may as well keep it if it does "go" eventually, it'd be waay easier to just stick with a helicoiled m6 thread. If you are sooo stupid to really want an m5 thread again, you'd need to take some more material out and use some kind of threaded insert (then thread m5 into that)...local bike garage job though...unless your dad is an engineer or summat..it really doesn't seem worth the hassle..adam
The Dude
worth a try, the O.D. of a 5mm helicoil is about 5.85mm, as far as i know, so it may be a little loose, but they expand a bit any way.go down to ur hardware shop and buy a set for about £10 and give it a try, if not, just file out the mounts to fit an M6 screw
Lawnmowerman
Take the frame to an engineer and see if they will timesert the mounts for you

dave33
time inserts are by far the best way to sort out a stripped thread, i think you need a 7mm hole for the m5 time insert far better than helicoils
