Options To Fix My Car

Heres the story........

Last feb I passed my driving test. A couple of weeks later I bought myself a Daihatsu Hijet MPV like this one

I payed £1500 for it as it was in A1 condition and had cheap insurence...I drove it around for 2 days and then left it for another two. I did less than 200 miles. On the 6th day of owning it I then drove it and a couple of friends to north wales for the indoor comp in march.

We got most of the way there and the dam thing fluncked out, luckily we managed to get a tow home.

My garage said the headgasket had gone and the block? had warped, new engine was best bet.

Its now nearly been a year and its still just sat there with the engine in the boot.

I have (well, my mum) rang a couple of scrap yards across the country and a couple have engines to fit...but the cheapest one is £300 not including delivery, VAT or fitting.

Is it still worth paying that much to get it running? If I did get an engine for it, I coupd possibly sell the whole car for near to what I bought it for and get somthing different.

Or I could sell it for parts.

What are your views?

Hi Ali

I would buy the new engine,

You had it for 6 days and the head gasket blew?, It can't of been A1 Condition

I would buy the new engine, Have it fully checked over by someone who really knows what they're doing, And buy a Head gasket, Preferably new.

You could alternatively try this repair system

But seems a little shady. :)

Good luck (Y)

yeah your right, it cant of been A1 condition...we tried to get my money back by reporting them to trading standars (selling unworthy cars or somthing)....but that fell though.

I am gonna keep looking for engines...I was told by a friend that over £150 would be very exspensive for one, but even the cheapest one is over twice that! :S

god I hate cars!! (N)

Are you sure that the Garage isnt having your pants down??

Do you even know for sure the head gasket has gone?

If the Hi-Jet is like the Supercarry (I used to own one) an engine change would be very simple.

For ally you know it could be something simple, or it could be something complicated.

But I dout that it could need a whole engine just for cutting out, unless you were driving it while it was overheating.

What were the syptoms bofore it went? Did it drive badly/overheat before??

Would be usefull to know what the engine is made of ect, will say all in the manual/haynes.

its a different garage thats doing the repairs to tha one I bought it from.

This was my first car ever, therefore I didnt (dont) know the first thing about them...so it started over heating, I didnt know what to do so we pulled up and let it cool down.

We then carried on and got onto a dual carridgeway, it started clunking and overheating again, but there was no hard shoulder so I couldnt pull over. I got off at the next junction and it cluncked out at the roundabout when I stopped.

So I did drive it over heated.

hehe not really the people who sold its fault then, most likely the garage that said its fecked are telling the truth too.

Hmmm

£300 does seem steep for a 2nd hand engine to me too, though i don't spose they are common like novas etc...

could probably find an alternative car for like £1K

dont want a mini, not enough room.

Dont wanna buy a cheap runaround car and just leave my hijet....that would be just like throwing away £1500.

Might just end up getting an engine and then selling the hijet (even though its VERY pratical)

yeah, getting around would be nice...but I have managed to scrounge off mates for nearly a year, I can cope for another few months yet :-

The hijet was ok, a bit scary though....feels like its gonna fall over at any given point, also I am scared of a crash, theres like 1ft of car infront of where I sit, I wouldnt get off lightly from a crash.

its also very slow.

but it can fit lots of bikes in, and sleep two people on two flat surfaces.
