Chains!

Hi I have just snapped my first chain and its worried me a little because I only did something small and would hate to think what would happen if I went big and it happened cause I really hurt myself doing somthing small. :o

FIrstly what chains do you use? How many times has it snapped? and do you use a split link or just link the chain up?

I was using a KMC and it has been fine for like 10 months. And i was using a split link. Are there any other chain out there better than a KMC and doe sit matter what split link you use like are there any CNC industrial fancy colour ones that are better and stronger?

All above is just to grasp what I like to see in the replies but any other extra info would be great. Cheers Josh (Y)

KMC's are only £10, actuly they're alot cheaper on supercycles now, special offer. So they could easily be replaced every third of a year or so.

I use a KHE callapse at the mo, seems to roll a bit nicer round the 12 cog. Suposed to be a tad stronger aswell.

Was is that split link that snapped? I've never snapped a kool chain personally, but I'd never use a split link, just nowhere near as strong as joining the chain properly. KMC gets my vote

the split link of a kmc kool chain is basically as thick as any other link, so i dont see how it can snap unless its fitted incorrectly or if you land on it harshly?

Use the flippin split link

If you join the chain, then its not going to be joined anywhere near the standard that the factory joins them, ergo, it will be the weakest link.

The split link doesnt work on the strength of the pin, its held together by a thick piece of metal, therefore is alot stronger than a pin you have pushed in yourself.

EDIT: this is for the kool split link, most others are shite

This Is what I wanted people to reply on mainly joining the chain or using a split link. I can see where your coming from with the split link. But peoples argument is that the split links metal is not as thick or high grade as the rest of the chain. I have only broke one and am very willing to try something new to see if its any stronger. I have a Ski plate so landing on it is almost impossible.

Just a little extra to talk about can anyone think of any safety designs so that if your chain/link snaps then your cranks dont spin round at the speed of light :P (My thoughts were somesort of locking mechanism in the BB so that if pressure is lost from the chain/cranks the BB Will tighten up a bit or at least lock after a quarter turn. Cause then you could at least stay on the pedals ! :D Just an idea. Josh

When you buy the chain, look for yourself and see what you think. Its just as thick as the other links.

All Im saying is the science in my eyes says use split link, I always use the split link, and my chain has never snapped on the split link or adjacent links.

only reason i didn't use the split link on ma' kool was because it didn't fit through my mech...

aite.

If you're riding a mod, the best chain is a BMX one called the 'Motorbike chain'. I forget who makes it, but it's huge - just looking at it you KNOW that you ain't gonna snap that, EVER. The downside is that it weighs a ton. I had one once and it lasted me forever on a bike that broke chains all the time. You also need a monstrous chain tool to fit it. I had to...ahem...'modify' mine to make it fit (hacksaw-tastic!)

Or you could always get one of these...

tried using a KHE, but it didnt work on a profile hub. had a kmc, was good, but i dont trust it. the day i bought it, a friend posted me with a pic of some german guy whose kmc chain snapped - he broke both his elbows and had to have some metal positioners to keep his arms in place before they healed. damn i was afraid for the next few days of riding :ermm:
