Greetings Posted January 2, 2006 Report Share Posted January 2, 2006 HelloAs somebody from outside the UK I am a bit puzzled by what makes you guys such good urban trials riders. I can only judge by what I see on videos, and most of them are smashing. I have not yet seen a very poor trials video from the UK.So what contributes to the English style? Certainly large dropgaps, gaps, the newschool sidehop, front wheel onto rail (dunno how you call it), huge taps. It's surprising that we don't see much of this in countries like Spain, France. German riders are magnificent but they have a different style - calm, easy. When I watch CLS or Tunnis moves it's like will he kill himself or not, is the bike going to stand it or will it just fall apart. I can name various incredibly good riders from arround the world, who make many videos and have never published any of the - may I call them - typically English moves.I dont believe that you guys ride more than the average passionate about trials person. So what makes you sidehop 128cm on a stock, or even 140cm on a mod bike? Strength? The fantastic English food? Royal Tea perhaps?During the short time I've been here, I have already read posts of youngsters who claim to have been riding for a few years. That's a great future. Baxter... he's probably a few times better than I am, and still he's twelve (correct me if I'm wrong). Damon claimed to be riding a year and a bit when we he released a movie with massive sidehops.Some of the moves are becoming boring to watch, like CLS and Tunicliffe doing sidehops onto fences or jumps onto the front wheel. But only when one tries it oneself, does one see how much precision, courage and devotion it needs to learn a "trick" like that. just an observation, but isn't leeds or liverpool the capital city of english trials? There are probably more of you there, than trials riders in my country... Another thing: do you guys know your vertical jump? Do you do Air Alert or Kangaroohops? Or do you just naturally develop your strength on a bike? I'll be working at the Wimbledon champs this year, and hope to take my bike with me. You progress much faster if you ride together with someone, and have more fun riding. For now it seems like people in the UK are focused on going big, and the biggest names at the moment are the guys that make the biggest moves and crazieszt video, so of course people try to ride like them. chrishayton Posted January 2, 2006 Report Share Posted January 2, 2006 the reason alot of english riders are good at street is down to this forum. neil tunnicliff and craig lee scotts zoo videos showed a completly new approach to street trials, even to this day few can compete with the shear power and balls these two riders have. most of the people on this forum(mainly the younger riders <18) wanted to ride like this so have adopted the style and quite a few have got very good.althought cls and tunni get slated for the video being repetive and poorly edited(although i think a certain amount of jealously is behind this). the street trials scene in the uk would not be the same without them(neither would dengs profits) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They consist of lots of rails, walls and other street stuff - more than anywhere else I've seen ever. Not only do big cities have all that stuff - I lived in quite small UK city Gravesend in Kent and there were rails, walls with full choice of height really EVERYWHERE. I think it is the key. In britain, (well for me), we find it hard to give up. We get stressed about not making a line, or section etc, that we get determined to make it. Then when we do, we try a few more times, then go bigger, and it goes on. Just keep pushing yourself to do it. Like earlier this evening, I was practicing sidehopping over stuff. I had a ladder layed out sideways in my road with some wood on top at 27", and kept knocking it on my way up and over. At first i started small, at about 17"(ish) and found it easy, so whacked somwe wood on top to make about 25", got that in the end, after many attempts. the went bigger, to 27". Kept messing it up, by hitting it with my pedal, or landing ontop of it, and falling off. Just keep pushing yourself to do it. yep, but after you reach a certain stage you need somebody to ride with you, preferably of greater skill, but within reach. Need sb like that badly...
