Riped Out Pedle Threads In The Crank Arm

Hi!

I have had to pairs of truvattive isis cranks now.

Both of which i have somehow managed to rip all of the threads out of the crank arm where the peddle is screwed into.

I haven't done it by cross threading the thread when i put them in, they just do it when im riding.

I get realy enoyed because they are not cheap cranks.

Dhat do you guys suggest?

Do i need better and stronger cranks?

Your help is welcome!!

So please reply shortly.

Thankyou!!

Are they Trials, Dh, Xc cranks? If they are Xc cranks its more than likely they wouldnt be built strong enough to take the beatings of trials. So i would check that mate (Y) If you want to fix the crank/s then get yourself a helicoil, im sure someone else can explain one better than me (Y)

Cheers Jay

If you're getting new cranks I suggest the new tensiles for two reasons

They have removable pedal inserts

They have been redesigned not to bite your ankles

If you want to keep your old cranks, then you do need to helicoil them and I to can not be bothered explaining :P

Are you sure you didn't cross thread? Because i didnt think i had before, and that they stripped just from riding, but my dad told me that they will realy only strip if they are cross threaded ect. so when you get new ones, the husslefelt trials should be fine, then when you screw in the pedals use nice copper grease and slowly screw them in with your fingers all the way and just give it a bit more tightness at the end with a spanner (Y) You could look into a better pair or cranks though, something like the new echos or middleburns or something along those lines (Y)

i would agree with what he said^^^ either tensiles or middle burns, but tensiles are sexual, and very pratical, due to the removable pedal inserts

hope it helped

the same has happened to me aand i didn't cross thread them either i was running the old echo ones. what ive decided to do is put my pedal in striaght and weld it in place and keep riding them until the pedals fall to bits or i have the money to get tensiles.

You cant weld ally to steel mate...

Helicoiling is the way forward until you can afford new cranks, they're just like a spring that is wound into the stripped hole with a tool (all this omes in a kit) and the spring then acts as a thread. Primo cranks were a f**ker for stripping before they made them with the steel inserts, only downer is that they're a shit design and the insert comes loose and spins when they get a bit older (N)

One of my mates is selling some Middleburns with red bash and 22t (I think)#

Mint condition really, hardly used.

But they're SQ Taper, but a new BB is about £15 ;):P

As said before, you could have cross threaded the arms, they would still screw on though.

I guess the pedal axle thread would have cut a new thread into the arms? Due to being stronger metal?

Like I said, only a guess.

Maybe thy weren't tight enough at the start, came loose, but you still rode with it, and fecked the threads.

Happened to my mate, so he got Tensiles (Y)

Could get some of the new (not the cnc ones) Echo Cranks in 170mm with ISIS Taper?

I've got the Sq taper 160mm on my Mod, feel nice, and quite a few people use them ;)(Y)

Helicoiling is another option, I think you just drill out the old thread, and helicoil it with the kit you get.

The theads will be much stronger too, and should last a good while.

But if you have the money for it, just get some new cranks, have a change.

As said before, Tensiles or 'burns are your best bet.

Look about for some selling 2nd hand if you have to (Y)

:Di recomend that u check that nothing is bent like the cranks or pedal axles because i did tthe same thing to my old cranks because my pedal was bent and when i put my weight on the pedals and rode around it started to rip the threads out the cranks it worth a look :D

Thanks mate that was great help!

Just one more question though.

Will any helicoil fit or do I have to get speicial ones?

You will need to get the right size fot the pedal, I "think" that a maggie mount(in the frame) is M6 or M5 but I'm not sure about the size for a pedal, you better ask someone else about that, but if you are getting the kit from a garrage ect. Then they should be able to tell you what size you need. If you take the cranks.

Hope I help.

Ollie.

4 bolt mounts on frames are M4

V mounts are M5

Isnt it husslefelts with the rmovale pedal insert???Might be mistaken
